Damage can Happen When you Least Expect It

Household emergencies can’t be predicted and the damage is typically far worse than anticipated. They can occur due to water, smoke, fire, and power outages. The problem arises from the unexpected nature of the situation and the fact that damage can be occurring for days or weeks without your knowledge.

When an emergency happens, it’s time to call in the professionals as quickly as possible. They can remove water, dry the premises, repair the problem, and restore a wide range of belongings to pre-damage condition. Professionals will provide pack out and content services for your possessions, sanitize the premises, and leave the entire area sparkling clean and healthy.

The following are just some of the common types of household emergencies that can be rectified through rapid restoration and mitigation services.

Appliances

Refrigerators and freezers are appliances that can leak and cause water damage. Sometimes they may just be at the end of their life expectancy. In other situations, a power outage will cause freezers and refrigerators to thaw and leak.

Bacterial/Viral Sanitation

Outbreaks of bacteria and viruses are extremely difficult to control by ordinary means. The methods available to a professional service are appropriate for homes, businesses, commercial properties, and medical/lab facilities.

Biohazard Cleanup

Crime scenes produce a variety of contaminants, including blood and other bodily fluids. Rapid cleanup and restoration of premises is essential and aids in addressing trauma. Another situation that constitutes a biohazard is a backed up toilet that can spread infectious diseases.

Blocked Drains

Blocked drains are inconvenient, cause significant damage, and can spread infectious and communicable diseases. It also affects air quality.

Burst Pipes, Leaky Water Heaters

A pipe that bursts violently will spray water for quite a distance. A slow leak from a broken pipe or water heater is insidious and can take months to notice. By the time it’s discovered, a significant amount of damage has been done to floors and walls. In condos and apartments, water damage can occur when water leaks down from above.

Damaged Roof, Gutters

Even a small leak from a damaged roof can compromise the structural integrity of a building. Damaged gutters result in rainwater backup that will seep under roof edgings. Both situations result in damage to the wood and insulation and promote mold growth.

Fire

A fire and resultant water from sprinkler systems or fire departments soak every inch of a structure and the acrid smell of smoke can be overpowering. Professionals can repair any damage, remove smoke and water, and sanitize the premises to eliminate any trace of mold or odor.

Mold

A side effect of leaky appliances, storm damage, and humid climates is mold. It can grow behind walls, in ceilings, and in air conditioning ductwork. It adversely affects air quality and can even be dangerous if you have allergies or chronic respiratory conditions.

Storm Damage

Hurricanes and even ordinary storms can result in flooding and storm surges. The damage is extensive and it’s imperative that the water and possessions be removed quickly to enable crews to dry the premises, repair any damage, remediate mold, and minimize damage.

Trusted Coronavirus Restoration

The COVID-19 pandemic has presented special challenges for schools, homes, businesses, and commercial properties. Highly contagious and with no treatment or vaccines available, expert sanitation services are essential. Coronavirus restoration is part of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) ongoing protocols for preventative measures.

Coronavirus restoration services are offered for a wide range of locations. The sanitation services for homes are particularly beneficial for anyone that has been diagnosed with COVID-19. Talking, coughing, and even normal breathing can deposit droplets that contaminate surfaces and increases the potential for reinfection. The services are also advantageous for those that want to take precautionary measures to keep their family safe and healthy.

Many people that have contracted the virus don’t demonstrate any symptoms, making it important for businesses to maintain an elevated standard of cleanliness and hygiene. That can be accomplished through coronavirus restoration. The mitigation services are an advantage for any business and especially so for food and beverage-based endeavors.

From childcare centers to colleges, the debate rages on as to when the facilities will open and how. Coronavirus restoration is absolutely necessary to provide the level of safety necessary to ensure that children of all ages and young adults can pursue learning and educational opportunities in a sanitized environment.

Gyms, salons, banks, supermarkets, manufacturing plants, and similar businesses where large numbers of people gather are in special need of coronavirus restoration. They provide a prime vector for the spread of the virus, along with hospitals and doctors and dental offices. Even though many healthcare-related industries are offering more tele-medicine visits, many patients still require in-person services.

Individuals are asked to wear masks and practice social distancing, but a great number of people aren’t following CDC recommendations. Coronavirus restoration services are available for any home, business, or commercial enterprise to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19. The services provide a healthy and hygienic environment where outbreaks have occurred and any location where the potential exists.

Professional Fire Restoration

A fire is traumatic enough for individuals without trying to address the resultant damage. Most people simply view the burned portions of a structure without ever considering the other avenues of damage that must be dealt with before any recovery can begin. Professional fire restoration is a multi-faceted process that requires multiple steps.

One of the most important aspects of hiring a professional fire and restoration service is that they will work directly with insurance companies for their clients. Insurance companies like working with restoration professionals as they will make every effort to preserve as many valuables and possessions as possible, which means the costs are lessened for insurance agencies.

Fire restoration begins with emergency services to board up the structure to prevent vandals and secure it from the danger of injury to anyone that might be tempted to enter. As soon as fire and law enforcement officials release the building from any investigations, fire restoration professionals go to work cataloging and packing valuables and possessions that can be salvaged for secure storage.

They’ll track and monitor inventory from pack up to replacement. Utilizing high-tech methods, moisture and odors will be removed from salvageable items. Possessions will also be treated to mitigate mold and mildew.

Water and debris will be removed to allow the next step in the restoration process to begin. In addition to restoring the building, structural integrity will be ensured. Electrical and plumbing components will be addressed for safety. One of the essential services provided by restoration experts is the mediation of mold and elimination of smoke and odors throughout the structure.

Dealing with the aftermath of a fire requires a multi-pronged approach that preserves possessions and removes debris. The services also mitigate mold growth and eliminate smoke and odor problems before beginning the process of rebuilding, restoring, and sanitizing the property.

Storm Damage can Come in Many Forms

Those in South Florida tend to think of storm damage in terms of hurricanes, but the state’s unique position lends itself to a wide variety of storms and resultant damage that many may not have considered. It’s not just during hurricane season that Florida residents have to be vigilant for storms and the damage they cause. The potential for extreme weather events exists year-round and they can take many forms.

Hail

While hail isn’t normally a concern in Florida, there have been documented reports of the frozen ice balls measuring up to three inches in size. It’s a rare occurrence, but when conditions are right for hail formation it can cause substantial damage. Hail can damage roofs, dent vehicles, and break windows in cars, homes and businesses.

Sinkholes

A sinkhole is generally considered a geological hazard, but they can have a weather-related component. South Florida isn’t as prone to sinkholes as other parts of the state, but the potential still exists. They can swallow homes, businesses and vehicles, along with costly infrastructure features.

Sinkholes occur when underlying soil is compromised due to water eroding and dissolving the rock underneath the surface. Much of Florida is comprised of limestone and other porous materials that are affected by large amounts of rainfall and flooding.

Water

Damage from water is always a concern for those in South Florida where rainfalls are higher than in other areas of the nation. Even relatively minor storms can drop significant amounts of rain that can lead to flooding. Storm surges from hurricanes are another threat to homes and businesses that result in millions of dollars in damages.

Wind

The winds from storm fronts, tornadoes and hurricanes can lift and damage shingles and blow down fencing. Even straight line winds can turn ordinary items into projectiles that can land on roofs, penetrate buildings, and tear and dislodge shingles. Elevated winds can also blow down trees and limbs that land on roofs, buildings, fences and vehicles.

Water Damage Should be Addressed Immediately

Water damage from any source is cause to immediately contact the professionals to begin the restoration process. Mold, mildew, and bacteria begin to grow within a few hours and that timeframe can be accelerated in the humid conditions found in South Florida. When addressed immediately, many furnishings, equipment, and even electronics can be saved, sanitized, and restored to their previous state.

The same processes and procedures are applicable for damage to structures. The first 24-48 hours are a critical time for addressing water damage. Time is of the essence and the success of remediation efforts will be directly impacted by how quickly they’re initiated.

A leak behind walls and moisture that seeps under flooring is a health hazard in the making. The same is true when the water comes from the fire department when extinguishing a blaze or a hurricane that causes flooding. Just because moisture isn’t immediately visible, doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist and isn’t causing damage.

Any type of unwanted moisture that enters a home or business has the potential to damage the structural integrity of the building. It’s just one of the reasons why individuals should waste no time in contacting a professional restoration company that extracts the water and dries any applicable areas on the premises.

When the drying process is completed, they’ll be able to remediate the damage. The professionals will have the experience and expertise to remove wallboard and other affected materials in a manner that minimizes the potential for spreading spores and contaminating other areas.

The success of the drying process and remediation efforts require a fast response to minimize damage. Restoration and recovery professionals are able to access technology and equipment that home and business owners can’t, but are essential for addressing damage from any type of water damage and restoring property and possessions to their previous conditions.

AIR-QUALITY-CONTROL

Add Duct Cleaning to your Spring Cleaning List

The ductwork in homes and businesses is one of the most overlooked areas of maintaining a healthy environment and better air quality. Clean ducts also save money, allowing heating and cooling systems to function better. Dirty ducts can actually make the people in a building sick, leading to more doctor visits and increased healthcare costs.

The air from heating and cooling systems is circulated throughout an entire structure via the ductwork system. As the air is cycled through, any contaminants are also circulated into every room. Those can range from dust and pollen to mold, along with unpleasant odors.

It’s not enough to simply change the filters. If the ducts in your home or business have never been cleaned, it’s an ideal time to schedule an appointment. The professionals will vacuum the dust, debris, and they can also determine if any wildlife has invaded your duct space.

Air Quality

Regular cleaning of air ducts creates a healthier environment and improves air quality. Having the ducts cleaned is especially important if you’re one of the millions of people that live with allergies or a respiratory condition. The humid conditions in South Florida can exacerbate the growth of mold and mildew.

Cleaning the ducts is critical after a hurricane. A wide variety of contaminants will find their way into a structure that’s been flooded that can cause you, your family, or customers symptoms ranging from headaches and nausea to fatigue, along with far more serious health problems. Ducts can foster the growth of multiple types of bacteria and fungi.

Efficiency

While it may not seem like dust, dirt and debris would cause much of a restriction in terms of the air flowing through your ducts, it does have an impact. Any type of impediment will affect the efficiency with which heating and cooling systems operate. That means the units will work harder and more often to perform their task, thereby costing you more money to operate.

Can the Smell from Smoke Damage ever be Removed?

When a fire occurs within a home or business, even if it’s extinguished quickly the smell of smoke will permeate the premises and possessions. Structures and possessions can also be afflicted with the smell of smoke from wildfires. Down through the ages a variety of home remedies have been utilized, but nothing can compare with the methodologies and technology available to restoration professionals.

Even when there are no visible signs such as soot, the odor has pervaded every area of the structure and the smell can have adverse effects on health. It’s especially dangerous for children, the elderly, pets, and those with weakened immune systems, along with anyone with respiratory conditions.

It’s essential that individuals act quickly to contact a restoration company. The longer that odors are in fabrics, the more difficult it will be to remove them. It will also be more expensive since more extensive methods will need to be employed.

Equally important is removing the items from the environment and into fresh air. Restoration professionals understand the importance of removing items from the premises as quickly as possible and offer emergency services to accommodate that need.

When building materials burn, they emit soot particles and exude substances that are oily, acidic, and toxic. Restoration professionals are specially trained to remove those residues without damaging textiles by breaking down the smoke molecules.

Professionals can remove the odor of smoke from a wide array of items encompassing drapes and carpeting to upholstery and clothing. The techniques and processes that are utilized are designed to penetrate deep within fabrics where odors lurk for deep-down deodorization.

Removing the smell of smoke from possessions and entire structures is a complex undertaking for which restoration professionals have been highly trained. They can provide a range of smoke and odor-related elimination services that leave possessions and structures smelling clean and fresh.

High-Risk Groups for Mold Exposure

Complications from mold exposure include nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing, skin and/or eye irritation, and upper respiratory infection. Really, anyone who comes into contact with mold can experience these symptoms. However, there are groups of people who are at higher risk of developing more serious complications from mold exposure.

High-Risk Groups

It is believed that there are three types of people who are far more susceptible to mold exposure than others. Here are these groups.

  1. People with respiratory problems like asthma, allergies, sinusitis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This makes sense since mold causes breathing problems; those who already struggle to breathe are going to be more impacted by mold exposure.
  2.  People who have a compromised immune system. This includes those with cancer and HIV.
  3.  The very old or the very young, as well as pregnant woman, can be affected by exposure to mold spores. In young children their immune systems are still developing, so exposure to mold will have a greater impact on these immune systems. In older people their immune system is run down and likely already stressed by other things having to do with their age. This makes them much more susceptible to the symptoms that come with mold exposure.

These issues are not only limited to these groups of people, though. Anyone who comes into contact with mold can be harmfully affected.

If you are unsure if you are affected by allergies to mold, one sure-fire way is seeing if your symptoms subside when you leave the home or area where you experience these symptoms. It’s possible you could have an undetected mold problem that you’ll want to have addressed.

If you fall into any of the above risk groups and have been experiencing any symptoms of mold exposure, then contact your physician. It’s important to keep the areas that you are aware have mold clean and dry. Bathrooms and basements are often breeding grounds for mold, so make sure you address these areas of your home by creating better ventilation and removing the moisture from these areas. Clean and dust free are going to be your first steps in combating mold problems and the spores that might be negatively affecting you.

Those sensitive to the effects of mold should avoid things such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas. Indoors controlling humidity in the home will help to keep the mold at bay. Removing the mold that you can see from hard surfaces can be done with soap and water or with bleach mixed with water. If you use bleach, be sure that you are in a well-ventilated area and never mix bleach and ammonia.

Being proactive with the exposure to mold is what’s going to be the best defense against any mold complications you experience. Knowing that you’ll have to be more diligent if you or someone you know falls into the above risk categories is going to go a long way to keeping everyone breathing normally and healthy. So do what you can to limit your exposure to mold, even if you are not a part of the high-risk group for mold exposure.

Common Places You’ll Find Mold

Mold can be found anywhere. It will sometimes hide in the most unexpected places. Having said that, mold can only grow in areas where there’s moisture. Here is a list of places to look if you suspect that you may have mold in your home.

  1. Chimneys – The spaces between the bricks collect water and dirt. This makes it a great place for mold to hide out. To remove the mold, replace any rusted caps and call a chimney sweep. They will be able to get the mold out of the chimney and they’ll also get any dangerous creosote. This will help your chimney to work properly.
  2. Refrigerator Drip Pans – Underneath your fridge you’ll get a lot of moisture from spills and from condensation. This makes it a prime place for mold to collect and grow. To remove the mold, spray the pan with hydrogen peroxide. Then, wipe the pan clean with white vinegar. For best results, clean the floor underneath the refrigerator too.
  3. Front Loading Washing Machines – The door of a front loading washing machine will get wet when in use. When it’s not in use and the door is closed, mold can and will collect on the door. To remove the mold, wipe the door and gasket before closing. If you see mold collecting, run some warm water with chlorine bleach. The mixture should kill any mold that has collected.
  4. Window Seals – Condensation collects there and with the mixture of water and dirt, the windows are a great place for mold to multiply and grow. To remove, open the window after a heavy rain. Wipe the moisture from the windows. If the seals between the windows are failing, replace them. Cleaning your window on a regular basis will prevent the growth of mold.
  5. Dishes – When you stack dishes that are still wet, it provides the perfect environment for mold to grow. To remove the mold, place the dishes in a dishwasher. You will want to wipe the cabinets with some vinegar to kill any mold that may be collecting there too. When done washing the dishes, dry them completely before putting away.
  6. Air Conditioners – When running, these trap dirt and dust and then collect moisture from the air. This provides food and moisture for mold to grow. To remove the mold from your AC, remove the front plate and use a HEPA vacuum to get rid of the mold. Then, clean the drain pan with bleach and water.
  7. Bathroom Tub – After taking a shower or bath, moisture has collected on the sides of the tub. This makes it a perfect place for mold to collect and grow. To remove, mix bleach and water in a spray bottle and spray it onto the affected area. Wipe off after a couple minutes.

If you think you have smelled mold in your home or if you suspect it may be in your home, these are good places to look. Mold can hide anywhere, which makes it hard to find. But just remember that mold can only grow where there is moisture for it to grow. If mold is found, remove it as soon as possible.
