Coronavirus Sanitation for Homes and Businesses

Vaccines are now available for the COVID-19 coronavirus, but it will probably be several years before herd immunity has been achieved. That will mean a continued regimen of disinfecting and sanitation. However, COVID-19 isn’t the only coronavirus that home and business owners should be concerned about in terms of safety since viruses can mutate quickly.

There are numerous types of known viruses within the coronavirus family that can affect the respiratory system. Depending on the virus, they cause illnesses ranging from the common cold and flu to viral pneumonia and the COVID-19 pandemic. Regular sanitation measures are important at any time of the year to protect the safety of families, business customers and staff.

Professional Sanitation

Hiring a professional sanitation service is the best solution for an elevated level of protection at any time of the year, but especially during the pandemic and in seasonal flu seasons. Professionals have access to specialized disinfectants, sanitizers, and technological solutions. They’re highly effective and safe to use around people and pets.

Another benefit of professional services is that staff are highly trained in mitigation and eradication techniques. They’re knowledgeable in the most common vectors and surfaces for contamination. Professional sanitation companies will also work with insurance companies to ensure the least amount of out-of-pocket expenses for clients.

Businesses

Businesses are required to establish mitigation measures to minimize the potential for COVID-19 spread. When a COVID-19 outbreak can be traced to a specific business, it may result in the enterprise being closed. The services of a professional sanitation company are an integral element for reopening or maintaining a business in which patrons feel safe in frequenting.

Schools

Every parent knows how easily and quickly infections can be passed among students and teachers. Learning is severely disrupted for everyone concerned. It’s extremely difficult to ensure proper handwashing protocols are maintained and limit touching of surfaces. Professional sanitation services are a critical preventative measure.

Homes

No matter how careful families are, there are numerous ways in which coronaviruses can be brought into the home. Students can become infected at school and parents can bring the viruses home through interactions with customers. Professional sanitation and mitigation services are equally appropriate for maintaining health in homes.

Home Areas to Inspect to Prevent Water Damage

Every home has an abundance of potential areas where damaging leaks can originate ranging from the roof to the basement. It’s not just water pipes that can cause problems for homeowners. Checking for leaks can be a time-consuming task, but the alternative is often water damage that goes undetected for months.

Under Cabinets

Pipe joints can loosen over time and plumbing can become eroded. Check under sinks in the kitchen, bathrooms, and laundry rooms to see if the space is dry.

Puddling

For many homeowners, the first sign of trouble is a small puddle of water that has no discernable source. The most common areas are around the base of tubs, showers, and toilets. Other areas in which puddling occurs is under clothes washers, water heaters, and dishwashers.

Attics

Damage to a roof can occur and lead to leaks that can continue for months before they’re detected. Checking the attic after a rain is the best way to determine if there’s a leak. If the leak has been occurring for some time, there will be residual areas of discolored wood in support beams even if it hasn’t rained recently.

Ceilings, Walls, Baseboards

If homeowners observe warping, peeling, sagging, or discoloration along baseboards, on ceilings, or on walls – there’s an above-average chance that there’s a leak. It could be originating from the roof or water pipes.

Water Meter

Rising water bills and increased usage are a good indicator that there’s a leak – assuming that the utility hasn’t recently increased rates. A leak could be originating from inside the house, but irrigation systems, outdoor faucets and underground pipes can also develop leaks. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency estimates that the average household of four shouldn’t use more than 12,000 gallons of water per month.

Vigilance

A new home is less likely to encounter problems than one that’s older. Homes with plumbing and water systems that are 20 years of age or older are on the back side of their life expectancy and more likely to develop leaks. However, individuals should remain vigilant from the moment they take possession of their home and seek the services of a professional if they suspect a problem.

Candle Safety in your Home

Candles are becoming an increasingly popular method of scenting the air and eliminating odors. They’re particularly popular during holidays, but can easily ignite a fire without the proper precautions. The following tips enable individuals to safely enjoy candles in their home whether they’re being used to create ambiance or they’re providing light if the power goes out.

Burning Candles

Rule No. 1 is to never leave a candle burning unattended. There should always be at least one person in a room where the candle is burning and never leave them lit when leaving home. If everyone moves to another room, extinguish the candle. The safest way to put out a candle flame is with a candle snuffer.

The Base

Always place candles on a solid base for stability and one that’s large enough to comfortably catch any wax drippings.

Distance

Burning candles should never be placed near flammable items such as drapes, books or paper, furniture and bedding, carpets, or decorations. It only takes moments for those types of materials to ignite.

Moving Candles

You should never move a candle while it’s lit or the wax is still liquified. Bear in mind that liquified wax can take several minutes to completely cool and solidify.

Burning Limits

Candles aren’t designed to be burned down to a nub. Change them out before they burn too low. A good rule of thumb is to replace taper candles when about ½ an inch of candle length remains and two inches for pillar candles.

Spacing

It’s never a good idea to place candles too close together. Dripping wax from one can ignite another. A good safety distance is to leave at least three inches between candles.

Wicks and Drafts

Candle wicks that exhibit a high flame should be trimmed. Wait until the candle cools sufficiently. If the flame is flickering repeatedly, the candle may be in the line of an unknown draft. Extinguish the flame and when it’s safe to do so, move it to a different location.

Do I Need to Worry about Roof Mold?

Mold occurs naturally in the environment and it typically only causes a problem when it affects health or properties. You may assume that mold is only a concern if it occurs inside your home, but there are other ways it can affect you and even others in your neighborhood. A highly overlooked area of mold dissemination is the types that grow on roofs.

Roof mold infestations occur throughout the nation, but Florida residents are particularly at risk due to the state’s humid climate. Roofs that receive a significant amount of shade are at increased danger. Mold can be growing on roofs for quite some time before it becomes blatantly obvious. It often appears as a green or brown organic mass, but can also display in the form of unattractive black streaks.

Mold Moves

Mold spores are easily and effectively disseminated to other locations through the wind. If your home is infected, the problem needs to be addressed promptly for the health of your own family, the structural integrity of your home, and the safety of other homeowners in the community. If you see an infestation in another home nearby, it’s imperative that you employ measures to prevent its spread to your home.

Home Damage

Mold isn’t just unsightly. It has the ability to damage the roof, spread to other areas, and impair the structural integrity of your home. It eats away at roofing material and provides an opening for mold to move indoors into attics through leaks. Given humidity and moisture, mold will quickly multiply in attics and can be spread throughout the home behind walls. Mold also grows in gutters and can be transferred to roofs.

Compromised Health

Mold is a type of fungi that can lead to ill health and it’s especially dangerous for anyone with respiratory conditions or a compromised immune system. It also has the ability to affect the health of pets.

Mitigation Measures

If mold is a problem for you or a nearby neighbor, call in mitigation and restoration professionals. They know where to look for spreading infestations and how to remove it without contaminating other areas. They can inspect roofs, treat infestations, restore areas of damage, and suggest preventative measures such as additional ridge vents or roofing materials that discourage mold growth.

5 Ways to Identify Water Damage

Water damage is seldom an immediately noticeable occurrence. It typically happens over an extended amount of time. It’s only when the damage has become extensive and widespread that individuals realize they have a problem. However, there are early signs that can be detected by observant individuals. The following are five ways to identify water damage.

Stains

If left long enough, water from roof leaks will drip down and begin to discolor ceiling materials and even walls. Individuals should use caution if their ceilings or walls are becoming discolored, as it may be mold that’s causing the staining – as a result of a water leak. All mold needs to thrive and expand is warmth, darkness, and moisture.

Changes in Walls, Floors or Ceilings

A change in the appearance of walls, floors or ceilings is never good news. Water damage can manifest in several ways. Paint may begin to sag or peel and floors and ceilings can begin to bow or warp. The trim around doors and windows may exhibit bowing and there can be visible breaks and cracks in caulk lines.

Unusual or Musty Odors

Molds and bacteria have a gassing off effect as they grow that’s responsible for what’s described as a musty smell. It’s a definite giveaway that mold is growing somewhere in the structure. Mold isn’t the only substance that may cause unpleasant odors. There are a great many modern building materials that emit an undesirable or unusual odor when they get wet.

Increased Utility Bills

Leaks and water damage can affect utility bills in various ways. When the leak is the result of a faulty appliance or pipe, water bills can increase. Roof leaks can saturate insulation, rendering it ineffective and electric bills will increase as cooling units become less efficient.

Water Sounds

Listen for the sounds of dripping, running water, or a hissing sound. The sounds will be most obvious when a home or business is quiet and no water is being used. Structures make a wide variety of creaks, groans and moans as they settle at night due to temperature fluctuations – but the sound of water isn’t one of them.

Repairing a Water Damaged Floor

Water damage to floors can occur in South Florida as a result of hurricanes or heavy rains, but those aren’t the only culprits. Sometimes the damage is due to indoor water leaks or appliance problems. Repair or replacement will depend on the type of water that caused the damage.

When the damage is mild and it hasn’t been standing for very long, it’s possible that the flooring can simply be replaced. That’s also assuming that it was white water that caused the damage. White water originates from showers, sinks, appliance malfunctions, and broken water pipes.

Hardwood flooring is one of the most susceptible to water damage, but any flooring can experience damage. Subflooring will need to be examined to determine the full extent of the problem. Signs that are an indication that the floor may need to be replaced rather than repaired include signs of buckling, crowning or cupping, along with discoloration, warping or odors.

Minor damage can often be addressed by a restoration company that will be able to dry the floor and remediate any mold growth. With the modern equipment available to restoration companies, there are no longer any hard and fast rules about water damaged floors. What once would be considered an automatic replacement can now be treated and repaired.

Restoration professionals will be able to make that determination while ensuring that structural integrity is being maintained. They’ll be able to ascertain if the damage is cosmetic or the flooring has become unsafe. Restoration experts will also work directly with insurance companies.

Faced with water damage and the potential for high insurance deductibles, many individuals opt to perform the work themselves. When water damage occurs, it’s always best to call in the professionals that have the experience and modern methods to deal with the emergency and ensure a home or business isn’t plagued with mold that can cause ill health down the road.

Unknown Dangers of a Roof Leak

Developing a leaky roof is something that everyone dreads. Repairs can be expensive and may not be covered by insurance policies, depending on the cause of the leak. What people don’t understand is that by the time a leak is detected, it’s typically been occurring for a significant amount of time and there are a variety of unknown dangers associated with a roof leak.

Mold and Mildew

It requires very little time for mold and mildew to begin to multiply. All it needs is moisture and warm conditions which are plentiful in South Florida. There are about a dozen naturally occurring molds that ordinarily affect structures and some can begin growing in as little as 24 hours. Mold and mildew can affect the health of people, pets, and is especially dangerous for those with asthma, allergies, and respiratory conditions.

Structural Damage

Moisture entering through a leaky roof soaks into the wood of roof supports and causes rotting that impairs structural integrity. The moisture also runs down roof supports to collect at the ceiling level. Over time, moisture will seep into spaces behind walls to damage wallboard. Water collecting at the ceiling or floor level can result in collapsed flooring.

Fire Hazard

Water seeping through the roof and behind walls will eventually come into contact with electrical wiring. It can result in shorts that can ignite a fire.

Increased Utility Bills

Water doesn’t stay in just one place. It will run and drip to saturate insulation, thereby reducing it’s insulative properties. The effectiveness of insulation can actually be depleted with a long-term leak and result in higher heating and cooling expenses.

Prevention

The best way to prevent leaks is to have the roof inspected once a year. It can be particularly advantageous after a damaging storm has rolled through. Roofing naturally deteriorates over time and wind can loosen roofing materials. It’s always a good idea to schedule an inspection if large branches have fallen on the roof. The inspection will identify areas that could potentially cause a problem in the future.

Ways to Prevent Fires at your Commercial Property

A fire is one of the most destructive and expensive disasters with which you’ll have to contend. The good news is that there are a number of measures you can take to reduce the potential for a fire and keep your commercial property safe.

Create a Plan

Create a plan for protecting your property just as you would for your home and family. For instance, identify critical areas where flammable liquids or materials may be located so you can inform the fire department when they arrive.

Reduce Fire Hazards

Reducing or eliminating the number of reasons and environments in which a fire can start is essential. That means ensuring that flammable or hazardous materials and liquids are stored correctly. Keeping up the maintenance on equipment and machines is critical. Always make sure electrical wiring adheres to the highest current standards. Old and defective wiring is one of the number one sources of fires. If employees smoke, make sure they do so in a designated area away from the building.

Fire Prevention Equipment

A sprinkler system should be installed in every commercial property. It can stop a small fire from expanding into an inferno and save lives. Smoke detectors and fire detection systems are invaluable for an early warning in the event of a fire. Every property should also be equipped with fire extinguishers and employees should be instructed in their use.

Evacuations

If the property is one where people will be living or working, employees and tenants should all be informed of where exits and fire extinguishers are located. If a fire does occur, you’ll need to have a list of all tenants and/or employees available for first responders and the fire department.

Vacant Properties

Even if a property is vacant, it requires protection. Fire and smoke detectors, along with sprinkler systems should be installed. Eliminate any unnecessary items or materials that would provide fuel for a conflagration. Be sure to install security cameras, as vacant buildings are often a target for arson and vandalism. It’s also a good idea to have security personnel conduct regular checks on the building.

Tips for Preventing Mold in your Home

No one wants a mold infestation in their home and there are specific measures that you can take to control the growth of the fungi in your house. Mold lives in outdoor and indoor environments and there are over a dozen of types of fungi that may typically be found in a home.

There’s always a certain amount of mold in any atmosphere and it can enter your home by multiple routes. A mold infestation can cause mild to severe symptoms, but it can even be deadly for those with a compromised immune system. The following are tips for preventing mold growth.

Humidity Levels

It’s essential that you control the humidity levels in your home. It should be no higher than 50 percent and air conditioners and dehumidifiers will both help accomplish that goal. It’s a good idea to buy a meter to monitor levels. They’re very inexpensive and a good investment.

Free Flowing Air

Construction that facilitates good air flow isn’t automatically designed into homes. It can be a good idea to open windows on a breezy day if the outside humidity level isn’t too high. Use exhaust fans while cooking and when bathing or showering to draw humid air outside. Also, make sure clothes dryers are vented outside the home.

Leaks

A leaky roof, pipe or water heater should all be repaired as quickly as possible to prevent the growth of mold. It only takes 24 hours for mold to begin to grow in moist conditions. Cleaning products that kill mold are especially beneficial in bathrooms.

Flooding

Severe rains and hurricanes that can result in flooding are both situations with which Florida residents must contend. After flooding has occurred, it’s imperative that you dry your home out as soon as possible.

Call a Specialist

An emergency mold remediation company should be called anytime that you have a leak or flooding. Leaks often aren’t immediately noticeable and mold growth will probably already have begun by the time you find it. The professionals will remove spoiled furnishings and belongings, remove the water, and treat any mold problems.
