Wet drywall

How Can You Tell if Drywall is Wet?

The majority of modern home construction utilizes drywall for walls and ceilings. The material adds fire resistance to homes to help contain the spread of fire, allowing people time to evacuate should a blaze occur. However, drywall is a porous material that can become a sponge for moisture resulting from a broken or leaky pipe or appliance, roof leak, or even excess humidity in the air.

Wet Drywall

Signs of Water Damage

Discoloration is one of the signs of wet drywall. There may also be streaking resulting from moisture running down walls or across ceilings. Paint or the outer surface of drywall may begin to bubble, peel, crack and soften. Blotches may also appear with discoloration ranging from dark yellow to brown. When sagging of walls or ceilings occur, the damage is extensive.

Behind the Scenes

You may think that the area you’ve identified is the end of the problem, but nothing could be further from the truth. There’s no way for you to know what’s going on behind the scenes. Damage can be far more severe than you think and even has the potential to affect the structural integrity of your entire home, depending upon how long the problem has existed.

Find the Source

It’s critical that the source of the moisture be identified and eliminated. That’s when the expertise of a professional remediation company is indispensable. The experts will be able to locate where the moisture is originating and repair it.

The Solution

A professional remediation company has the tools, skill and resources to dry out the premises and eliminate mold that will almost certainly be present. Remediation companies work with a network of highly-trained professionals in diverse fields to remove affected materials and restore homes to their previous condition. Remediation experts also have on-site adjusters that will work directly with your insurance company throughout the entire restoration process.

restore flood damaged floors

Is it Possible to Restore Flood Damaged Floors?

In some instances, it may be possible to restore a floor that’s been damaged due to flooding, if the damage has been restricted to a relatively small area. Much will depend on the extensiveness of the flooding and other factors will be taken into account such as the type of flooring and the type of water that caused the damage.

Restore Flood Damaged Floors

Some types of flooring are more prone to damage and will have to be fully replaced, while others may sustain less damage. Ultimately, homeowners may have little input on the decision to repair or replace. The insurance company that issued the homeowners policy will make the decision based on which is more cost-effective for the company.

Water Type

A major factor will be the type of water involved in the flooding. Category 1 (clean water) water poses little threat to humans. It typically originates from leaky or broken pipes, tubs and sinks, or breaks in supply lines that deliver water into the home. Category 2 (gray water) water has been contaminated with biological or chemical elements that can cause discomfort or illness when consumed.

Category 3 (black water) has been contaminated with pollutants that can include bacteria, fungi and viruses, along with chemicals, fertilizers, industrial waste, and even feces. It’s the most dangerous type of floodwater that can affect homes. It presents an extreme danger to people, pets and plants.

The decision to repair or replace will also be based on whether the damage is cosmetic in nature or if it the damage presents a danger to the people that live in the home, if mold has formed, and if the subflooring has been damaged.

There are many elements that go into the decision of whether to replace or repair floors that have been flood damaged. Insurance companies will typically opt for repair whenever possible as the least expensive option for the company. However, floors damaged by certain types of water will necessarily have to be replaced.

Fire Protection

Protecting Your Home from a Fire

Your home represents a considerable investment and it’s one of your most valuable assets – it just makes good sense to take measures to protect your property from fire. The leading causes of house fires that ignite from indoor threats are cooking equipment, heating systems, faulty wiring, lighting, blocked vents, and curious kids.

Fire Protection

Today’s homeowners also have to worry about outside elements that can damage or completely destroy homes that including wildfires. The following are some easy and inexpensive ways to protect your home against a fire. Some can even result in savings on your house insurance.

Smoke Alarm

One of the most effective and inexpensive methods of fire protection are smoke alarms. They’re an early warning system that can save lives. Placement will depend on the layout of the home. It’s best to have them professionally installed and maintained for optimal performance.

Fire Extinguishers

The devices are essential for putting out small fires before they become major conflagrations. They limit damage and an extra benefit is that they reduce the amount of pollution emitted by smoke when materials are burned. Check them regularly to ensure they haven’t expired.

Exit Lighting

A fire produces smoke and soot that decreases visibility. When combined with the panic that accompanies a fire, it’s easy to see why exit lighting is critical. It provides you and your family with highly visible illumination that directs them to exits, allowing them to escape. The lighting also helps people avoid injuries from stumbling over furniture and other obstacles while evacuating.

Cooking

A majority of house fires begin in the kitchen. Never leave cooking or baking endeavors unattended and that includes outdoor kitchens or grills. Keep flammable items as far from cooking as possible.

Heating Sources

Portable heaters are also a major cause of fires, along with outdoor heaters, fireplaces and bonfires. Never leave heaters or open flames unattended and keep the heat source away from flammable objects. It’s also a good idea to keep firewood at least 30 feet away from your home and clear vegetation from around the perimeter of the home that could fuel a fire.

pipe burst

What to do if a Pipe Bursts in Your Home

A burst pipe doesn’t necessarily occur with a bang and an eruption of water. Sometimes a burst pipe results in a leak that causes damage over a long period of time and can be difficult to identify. A suddenly burst pipe calls for immediate action to minimize damage.

Burst Pipe

Shut Off the Main

Immediately turn off the water supply at its source – the water main. It prevents more water from being dispersed through your home and causing even more damage.

Call a Plumber

Don’t attempt to fix the problem yourself – immediately call a professional. Plumbers are in high demand and you may have to wait for him/her to arrive. In the meantime, drain the faucets. Your plumber will be able to diagnose and identify the source of the deluge and repair it according to the highest standards.

Remove the Water

You can use a mop or a wet-dry vac if you have one. The objective is to remove as much water as possible to minimize its spread under flooring and inside walls. Quickly drying up the water also minimizes the potential for mold growth.

Call a Remediation Company

A professional remediation company has the tools and experience to remove the remaining water and thoroughly dry the premises. The company also has on-site adjusters that work directly with your insurance company and within the parameters of your insurance policy to rectify the damage.

Mold can begin to grow in as little as 24 hours in damp and dark conditions. The fungi have the ability to spread its roots into any porous material such as wallboard. A remediation company has the knowledge and protective measures required to eradicate mold and prevent it from spreading to other areas of your home. The company also works with a network of other professionals to remove damaged materials and restore your home to its original condition.

indoor air quality

How to Test Air Quality in Your Home

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is essential for your health and overall wellbeing. Some of the first warning signs that you may have a problem include:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing and allergies
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dry skin and irritations
  • Inability to sleep
  • Dust buildup in vents and air filters
  • Unpleasant odors
  • Hot and cold spots

If you notice any of those symptoms and suspect your home is the victim of poor air quality, it’s easy to find out with an indoor air quality meter. There are a number of brands from which to choose. The amount of pollution will vary from home to home, even within the same community or neighborhood. An air purifier is a good option for any structure and ventilation is essential – just open a window.

IAQ Monitors

The devices continually monitor the air in your home. Depending on the model, it may measure levels of carbon dioxide, radon, and formaldehyde, along with multiple types of volatile organic compounds (VOC) encompassing those from cooking, burning wood and cosmetics to those emitted by upholstery, photocopiers, flooring, and building materials.

Mold

IAQ monitors typically don’t provide information on mold levels in your home. The general consensus among professionals is that they’re not that accurate. You should be aware that almost every home contains fungi to varying degrees. Mold is present in the natural environment and can enter your home on hair, clothing, shoes and pets. The fungi can even reside in HVAC units and circulate through your home. Dealing with an infestation of mold is a job for mold remediation specialists.

Radon Monitors

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms as a result of the breakdown and decay of uranium deposits in the soil. It’s odorless, colorless and a known carcinogen. It can enter your home through cracks in the foundation, areas around pipes, and flooring. It concentrates in the lower levels of homes. Radon detectors are a good investment in your health.

spraying mold

Why Spraying Mold is not the Answer

There are dozens of home remedies that people have used to kill mold in their house, only to discover it’s returned. The most popular home concoction consists of a bleach and water solution sprayed on the affected area. The facts are far different than reality – spraying bleach on mold is perhaps one of the worst things that individuals can do.

Bleach only kills some types of molds. It’s effective on most hard and non-porous surfaces, but it doesn’t work if there’s mold on surfaces such as hardwood flooring or drywall. When the fungi find a welcoming environment on a porous surface, it methodically begins to sink its roots deep into the surface. Simply spraying the surface doesn’t kill the roots so it regrows.

Moisture

Mold grows in warm, damp environments. Spraying bleach and water on mold does nothing but provide it with additional moisture to begin its life cycle again. The chlorine in beach quickly dries and dissipates, leaving the water to feed the fungi.

Color Loss

Mold will typically appear as a dirty spot. It’s often one of the first ways that individuals discover that they have a mold problem. Bleach leaches the color from mold and the surface may appear “clean,” but the fungi continue to grow.

Damage to Surfaces

Bleach has the potential to weaken the structural integrity of homes. When used on wood surfaces, bleach weakens and breaks down fibers. Bleach removes color from the items it touches. When applied to metal – particularly copper and stainless steel – it reacts with the metal and causes corrosion.

Lack of Sanitizing Power

When mixed with water, bleach quickly loses its strength. The odor of bleach may linger for a while, but it doesn’t provide any residual effects so mold and bacteria will quickly return. Light and heat also compromise the effectiveness of bleach solutions.

Safe Microbials

There are a number of microbial agents on the market – both chemical and those that are eco-friendly. Many are registered with the EPA as mold-specific. They have an immediate effect and actually work to prevent the fungi and mold from growing back.

mold in home

What You Should do if You Find Mold in Your Home

Mold is present throughout the natural environment and it can easily find its way into your home. The spores are very tiny and can enter through HVAC systems, on clothing, hair, shoes and pets. It typically doesn’t cause too much of a problem unless it’s a large infestation, you happen to be allergic, or you have a weakened immune system.

Mold will typically make surfaces appear dirty and there may be a musty smell. According to the CDC, small infestations can be removed with home remedies that include a solution of bleach and water, followed by an antimicrobial spray when the bleach and water formula has dried. Special gear will be required. Here’s what to do if you find mold growing in your home.

Large Infestation

If the infestation is large, leave it alone. The best solution is to contact a professional mold remediation service. They’ll take samples and have them lab identified. The specialists will seal off affected areas to prevent it from spreading, treat the contaminated area, and dispose of any affected materials in an appropriate manner.

Follow the Moisture

Mold requires warm and damp conditions to grow. In many instances, a leak is responsible for the growth. Moisture may be originating from a leaky roof, water heater or even pipes between the walls. Mold can also grow in HVAC systems and be distributed throughout your home. The location of the moisture must be determined to effectively treat all areas.

Collateral Damage

Depending on the extent of the infestation, you might discover that you may have to remove wallboard, flooring and other building materials. A wide variety of areas in the home can become collateral damage in a mold infestation.

Prevention

There are multiple strategies you can employ to prevent an infestation. Keep gutters clean and have any damage to roofs promptly repaired. Regularly change the filters in HVAC units. It can also be beneficial to conduct a visual inspection for leaks in basements, under cabinets where water pipes are visible, around water heaters, and appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators and dishwashers.

Mold Illness Symptoms

Mold Illness Symptoms

There are approximately 12 common molds that typically inhabit homes and businesses. Mold occurs naturally in the environment and when there’s a significant indoor infestation, it can result in illness. Many of those symptoms are often attributed to other causes.

When exposed to mold, it triggers an immune system response that’s often attributed to asthma and other respiratory conditions. There are medications that can help with mold-induced symptoms, but the best way for people to deal with mold is to have it removed. That requires the experience and expertise of mold remediation specialists.

Mold allergy symptoms can vary widely among individuals and range from minor to severe. Much like ordinary allergies, they can occur all year, only during certain times of the year, or under environmental or weather conditions. Those with a mold allergy may experience:

  • Itchy eyes, throat and nose
  • Watery eyes
  • Headaches
  • Sneezing
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Cough and postnasal drip
  • Scaly or dry skin

For those that have other allergies or asthma, symptoms can include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Individuals may have an increased risk if there’s a family history of allergies. The same is true for people that work at jobs with a higher risk of exposure. Some of those include winemaking, baking and woodworking, along with farming, logging, and HVAC servicing. Structures exposed to moisture and with poor ventilation increase risk.

Most mold exposure produces mild symptoms, but it can also result in more serious conditions when mold enters the lungs or nasal cavities. Those can include asthma, fungal infections and inflammation, along with infections of the mucous membranes and skin. It can be especially dangerous for those with impaired immune systems.

Anyone that suspects a mold infestation can avail themselves of the services of a mold remediation service. They’ll isolate the source and take samples for precise laboratory identification. Mold remediation experts will then remove it without contaminating other locations.

Indoor Mold

How to Test For Indoor Mold Spores

If you think you may have mold growing in your home or business, it’s a good idea to have mold testing done. Mold can be a serious health risk to people and pets – even if it’s not showing up in the numbers, mold is still present. Indoor mold growth has been associated with serious respiratory problems including asthma. Even if the mold growth doesn’t cause symptoms, people who have a mold problem are at increased health risks for a variety of other reasons.

Mold Testing

Mold testing typically involves collecting a small number of black or dark spores from a contaminated air sample. Samples are then tested for common mycotoxins – which includes the deadly Stachybotrys chartarum and the toxic species Penicillium myristcae. Stachybotrys chartarum is known as the mycotoxin species because it produces mycotoxins when it grows. These mycotoxins can be dangerous in large amounts because they can irritate the membranes of the respiratory system. Inhaling large amounts of Stachybotrys mold can even cause toxic pulmonary asthmatic syndrome.

The second step in testing for mold is to test for spores of the species involved. There are numerous techniques for checking for these microscopic organisms. The most commonly used technique involves using an optical microscope to take a high magnification image of the sample through a water sample. If the spore appears, this implies that there is spore production in the sample and it may pose a health risk. High magnification images also help identify the species of mold involved – it’s a good idea to use various techniques to determine this so that you have a better chance of dealing with it successfully.

Airborne Samples

The third step in testing for indoor mold involves obtaining airborne samples. Samples of airborne mold spores can be obtained by using special masks designed to collect and contain the airborne spores. Mold spores will land on the mask and be inhaled, later entering the body. This is a common method of testing for indoor mold. If the spore is found in the mask, it suggests the presence of airborne mold spores.

Air sampling is not the only option that many people consider when testing for mold. A ventilation system for the home is another common option. With the right equipment and a ventilation system in place, many people believe that they can remove the mold if they simply open the windows and allow fresh air to enter the home. Unfortunately, if the ventilation system is not working properly, there could be many unseen molds growing in the home. It is very important to ensure that you are testing for mold both inside and out.

indoor air quality

A Guide To Indoor Air Quility

Indoor air quality is directly dependent on the number of pollutants in your indoor air. The air that you breathe in every day contains thousands of contaminants. In addition, your indoor air may contain many toxins that have made it through your ventilation system and into your home. Unfortunately, not all contaminants can be seen or smelled. There is also the chance that some indoor air quality problems don’t appear to be visible or that you aren’t aware of. Either way, you can bet that some of the pollutants in your air are making you and your family ill.

A simple rule of thumb when it comes to Indoor air quality is this: if your ducts appear dirty, then they probably are. Regular duct cleaning services is a key cornerstone of improving indoor air quality throughout your home. In fact, the air ducts that transport air throughout your home carry many toxic and harmful elements such as radon gas, toxic mold, pollen, and dust. These gases and particles can build up over time and make their way into the air you breathe.

Contaminants

It’s difficult to imagine how much dirt and debris can accumulate in your ventilation system over the years. The majority of dirt and contamination comes from carpet fibers, dust mites, and mold spores. Over time, these tiny particles become larger and heavier, so they are more likely to be picked up by the air ductwork and cause contamination inside your home. Dirty air ducts are often the cause of many health problems for people living in unclean houses. Therefore, if you want to avoid these health problems, you should make sure the ductwork is regularly inspected.

Inspections

Although it is important to periodically inspect and clean your air ducts, you should also consider hiring a company that offers annual indoor air quality inspections. The reason why this is better than doing it yourself is that a professional service will have the appropriate equipment to be able to detect contaminants at an affordable price. Some companies also offer air duct cleaning services alongside their inspection services.

Now that you understand what causes indoor air pollution in your home, it is important that you take the steps you can to reduce or eliminate it. Indoor air quality has become more important than ever in recent years because of the number of pollutants indoors. Therefore, it is more important than ever to hire a reputable company to do a quality air duct cleaning. If you do that, you can breathe easier knowing that you and your family are breathing the best air possible.
