There are four categories of biohazarad waste, and a disposal method, per each:

  • Solid biohazards (non-sharps waste) – include gloves, towels and culture containers that are contaminated with human blood, semen and other specimens. Proper disposal includes placing the contaminated materials in a leak-proof cotainer, lined with a biohazard bag, and clearly labeled with a biohazard symbol.
  • Liquid biohazards – include blood products, body fluids and large quantities of human blood. Proper disposal includes using chemical or autoclave treatments.
  • Sharps – include needles, syringes, slides contaminated with human or animal specimen materials, or broken tubes of human blood. Proper disposal includes wiping down the items with a disinfectant, permanently closing a container with the item, and contacting a medical waste disposal contractor to pick up the items.
  • Pathological waste – include human organs, tissues, body parts, animal tissues and carcasses that have been exposed to human-derived materials. Proper disposal includes double-bagging the items in a biohazard bag that is clearly labeled with a biohazard symbol, and taken away for incineration.
