Storm damage

Preparing your Home to Minimize Storm Damage

Even a small storm can result in damage, but South Florida homes are subject to hurricanes that are much stronger and destructive. To minimize damage, it’s essential that you have a plan in place to prepare your home to minimize the damage, even if you don’t live on the leading front of a storm. Flooding and flying debris can affect homes farther inland and severe weather can spawn tornados.

Windows

Put up shutters if you have them or board up the windows with plywood. Don’t wait until the last minute, as plywood will be in short supply due to others boarding up their own windows. Another option is installing impact glass. It spiders and splinters like glass in windshields, but won’t break and fall from the frame.

Flooding

If there’s a danger of a storm surge, flooding, you live in a low area, or on an inland lake, sandbags placed around a home can aid in minimizing water entry. It’s also a good idea to check your roof for damaged tiles. Keep gutters cleaned to ensure that water flows freely and won’t back up under roof tiles.

Outdoor Items

Place patio furniture, children’s toys, trash cans and similar items in a garage or storage building to prevent them from blowing around and causing damage to other homes. Park vehicles in the garage and make sure outbuildings and garages are locked.

Yard Debris and Plantings

Have leaf piles cleared away that can block drains. Make sure you have any damaged tree branches or limbs trimmed to prevent them from becoming wind-blown projectiles. If you have coconut trees, make sure the fruits are removed. It’s a good idea to remove the produce from any type of fruiting tree.

Go Bag

You may be required to evacuate during a hurricane or shelter in a basement during a tornado. Keep a go bag ready for your family and any pets. The State of Florida and Red Cross websites provide a list of essential preparedness items and quantities to keep on hand.

Storm Damage can Come in Many Forms

Those in South Florida tend to think of storm damage in terms of hurricanes, but the state’s unique position lends itself to a wide variety of storms and resultant damage that many may not have considered. It’s not just during hurricane season that Florida residents have to be vigilant for storms and the damage they cause. The potential for extreme weather events exists year-round and they can take many forms.

Hail

While hail isn’t normally a concern in Florida, there have been documented reports of the frozen ice balls measuring up to three inches in size. It’s a rare occurrence, but when conditions are right for hail formation it can cause substantial damage. Hail can damage roofs, dent vehicles, and break windows in cars, homes and businesses.

Sinkholes

A sinkhole is generally considered a geological hazard, but they can have a weather-related component. South Florida isn’t as prone to sinkholes as other parts of the state, but the potential still exists. They can swallow homes, businesses and vehicles, along with costly infrastructure features.

Sinkholes occur when underlying soil is compromised due to water eroding and dissolving the rock underneath the surface. Much of Florida is comprised of limestone and other porous materials that are affected by large amounts of rainfall and flooding.

Water

Damage from water is always a concern for those in South Florida where rainfalls are higher than in other areas of the nation. Even relatively minor storms can drop significant amounts of rain that can lead to flooding. Storm surges from hurricanes are another threat to homes and businesses that result in millions of dollars in damages.

Wind

The winds from storm fronts, tornadoes and hurricanes can lift and damage shingles and blow down fencing. Even straight line winds can turn ordinary items into projectiles that can land on roofs, penetrate buildings, and tear and dislodge shingles. Elevated winds can also blow down trees and limbs that land on roofs, buildings, fences and vehicles.
