Can Floors Get Mold?

Mold growth is a common problem with South Florida heat and humidity. All mold needs to grow is warmth and moisture. The fungi sink its roots into organic, porous materials where it proliferates. Floors are vulnerable to mold growth, whether it’s hardwood or carpeting. It can be difficult for individuals to distinguish a moldy surface from one that’s dirty.

Floors can develop mold and depending on how long it’s been multiplying, it may have resulted in damage that can compromise the structural integrity of the building. Mold can appear under floorboards and carpeting. That’s where the services of a professional remediation company are invaluable.

It’s important to understand that home remedies are ineffective. They remove mold on surfaces, but they’re unable to reach the roots. The roots must be killed or the fungi will return. A professional remediation and restoration service will take a sample and have it analyzed in a laboratory to ascertain exactly what type of mold is present.

The experts will create a treatment plan and all affected areas will be isolated to prevent contaminated materials from infecting other locations. The company will treat and reclaim any affected materials whenever possible.

Carpeting will need to be removed, replaced, and the mold eliminated. When mold is present under floorboards, there may be no other option than to replace the flooring. If the mold has spread to underfloor supports, it can cause significant damage to the entire structure.

A restoration company works with professionals in other industries that can make needed repairs and they’ll oversee the entire project from start to finish. Mold can affect any structure. All the fungi require is moisture and warmth to begin the process and it can grow unnoticed for an extended amount of time. Anytime a musty smell is detected, it’s a signal that mold is present and a professional remediation company should be consulted.

humidity sensor

Types of Humidity Sensors

Humidity levels can be a problem in South Florida, leading to mold growth and uncomfortable conditions. At the same time, the amount of humidity in the air will have an effect on whether the air “feels” warm or cool. It’s a good idea to monitor humidity levels for the health of people, pets, and structures.

The proper name for humidity sensors is hygrometers and they work by detecting the moisture in the air. Knowing the humidity levels in homes and businesses enables people to control the environment by engaging air conditioning in the summer and a humidifier in the winter. The following are the three types of humidity sensors.

Capacitive

This sensor measures the relative humidity – the percentage of moisture in the air for the current temperature. They offer stable readings and can detect a wide range of humidity levels. There are tabletop models of varying sizes that can be set in any room of the house. Some operate with a battery, some don’t. There are also electronic models that operate via Wi-Fi.

Resistive

A resistive sensor also monitors relative humidity and is known as a hygristor. Like capacitive sensors, they’re an effective, yet low-cost option for measuring relative humidity. Resistive sensors are able to monitor from remote locations in which the sensor and the signaling circuit is larger.

Thermal

These measure the absolute humidity level – the level of humidity without factoring in the temperature. Thermal sensors are typically utilized in high-temperature environments or those that are corrosive in nature. They’re highly durable and are capable of providing higher levels of accuracy than other types.

Why It Matters

Relative humidity levels of 30 percent or less results in dry skin. It also affects the body’s mucous levels in the nose, throat and eyes, thereby increasing the risk of becoming ill. Low humidity can be detrimental to hair, leaving it with a flat appearance.

Low humidity increases the presence of static electricity that can give people and pets a shock, and damage electronics. Humidity levels that are too low warps furnishing and can even cause paint to crack on walls.

How to Detect Mold in Carpets

The potential for mold is very real, particularly in warm climates with high humidity. It can occur even with the use of air conditioning to maintain a cool environment and reduce humidity levels. Mold infestations produce the same symptoms as allergies and is especially dangerous for anyone with respiratory conditions such as asthma and COPD.

Odors

As mold proliferates, it emits a distinctive odor that’s been described as musty, earthy and stale. No matter what the term used to describe it, the odor is extremely unpleasant. The smell will permeate the entire home or business.

Color

Conduct a visual inspection of the carpet for green, white or black growths. A magnifying glass may need to be needed. Wear a mask to prevent mold inhalation.

Beneath the Carpet

Mold is a type of fungi and will often begin growing underneath carpeting before signs are demonstrated on the surface. Carpeting below ground level and in bathrooms are at the highest risk of developing mold. Anti-microbial rubber carpet pads are available that help resist mold growth.

Allergies & Illness

Mold produces multiple symptoms in people that most individuals mistake for allergies, including runny nose, red eyes, sneezing, and difficulty breathing for people that have respiratory conditions. Anyone experiencing symptoms outside of typical allergy season, or if symptoms improve when they leave the structure, the problem could very well be mold.

Remediation

Anyone that suspects they have mold growing in the home or workplace should call a professional remediation service. The experts have the tools, experience and expertise to detect mold and handle it safely. Individuals shouldn’t try to remove or treat a moldy carpet themselves. The fungi’s spores easily spread and can contaminate even the smallest nooks and crannies.

Individuals that have experienced flooding from a broken pipe, defective appliance, or natural disaster should assume they have mold growth. In warm and damp conditions, the fungi can begin growing and spreading in as little as 24 hours. Call a mold remediation specialist immediately. If mold is present, the professionals have the training and experience required to contain the infestation and remove it.

Mold Illness Symptoms

The First Sign of Mold can be Detected with Your Nose

People often live with a mold infestation for months or even years without even knowing about it, even though their nose is telling them its there. The first sign of an infestation by the fungi is a musty odor. Some also characterize it as a stale or earthy smell. No matter what you call it, the result is the same – mold growth.

The smell of mold has also been described by some as a damp, sour or rotting odor. There are approximately 12 types of naturally occurring fungi that may be found in homes. It lives outdoors and is brought into homes on hair, clothing, shoes and even pets.

Mold only needs moisture and warmth to begin multiplying. It sinks roots into any porous material, such as drywall, wood or fabric, and begins the process of expansion. Fungi releases what scientists call microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), which are a type of gas, as they grow. It’s the mVOCs that are responsible for the odor.

Each type of fungi releases a slightly different smell, and identifying the source of mold can be difficult. If the infestation is expansive enough to cause odors, it’s typically large enough to see. Tracking it down can present problems due to where it’s located and the color often blends with its surroundings.

Once mold has become a problem your nose can detect, it’s well enough advanced to have an impact on your health. It can exacerbate allergies and respiratory conditions. You may experience a runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion that improves when you leave the home.

Bleach and similar home remedies don’t work since they don’t penetrate down to kill mold at its roots. Call in professionals for a mold problem. They’ll use lab analysis to identify the type of mold, isolate the area to prevent it from spreading to other locations, and use appropriate methods to eradicate it.

spraying mold

Why Spraying Mold is not the Answer

There are dozens of home remedies that people have used to kill mold in their house, only to discover it’s returned. The most popular home concoction consists of a bleach and water solution sprayed on the affected area. The facts are far different than reality – spraying bleach on mold is perhaps one of the worst things that individuals can do.

Bleach only kills some types of molds. It’s effective on most hard and non-porous surfaces, but it doesn’t work if there’s mold on surfaces such as hardwood flooring or drywall. When the fungi find a welcoming environment on a porous surface, it methodically begins to sink its roots deep into the surface. Simply spraying the surface doesn’t kill the roots so it regrows.

Moisture

Mold grows in warm, damp environments. Spraying bleach and water on mold does nothing but provide it with additional moisture to begin its life cycle again. The chlorine in beach quickly dries and dissipates, leaving the water to feed the fungi.

Color Loss

Mold will typically appear as a dirty spot. It’s often one of the first ways that individuals discover that they have a mold problem. Bleach leaches the color from mold and the surface may appear “clean,” but the fungi continue to grow.

Damage to Surfaces

Bleach has the potential to weaken the structural integrity of homes. When used on wood surfaces, bleach weakens and breaks down fibers. Bleach removes color from the items it touches. When applied to metal – particularly copper and stainless steel – it reacts with the metal and causes corrosion.

Lack of Sanitizing Power

When mixed with water, bleach quickly loses its strength. The odor of bleach may linger for a while, but it doesn’t provide any residual effects so mold and bacteria will quickly return. Light and heat also compromise the effectiveness of bleach solutions.

Safe Microbials

There are a number of microbial agents on the market – both chemical and those that are eco-friendly. Many are registered with the EPA as mold-specific. They have an immediate effect and actually work to prevent the fungi and mold from growing back.

What You Should do if You Find Mold in Your Home

Mold is present throughout the natural environment and it can easily find its way into your home. The spores are very tiny and can enter through HVAC systems, on clothing, hair, shoes and pets. It typically doesn’t cause too much of a problem unless it’s a large infestation, you happen to be allergic, or you have a weakened immune system.

Mold will typically make surfaces appear dirty and there may be a musty smell. According to the CDC, small infestations can be removed with home remedies that include a solution of bleach and water, followed by an antimicrobial spray when the bleach and water formula has dried. Special gear will be required. Here’s what to do if you find mold growing in your home.

Large Infestation

If the infestation is large, leave it alone. The best solution is to contact a professional mold remediation service. They’ll take samples and have them lab identified. The specialists will seal off affected areas to prevent it from spreading, treat the contaminated area, and dispose of any affected materials in an appropriate manner.

Follow the Moisture

Mold requires warm and damp conditions to grow. In many instances, a leak is responsible for the growth. Moisture may be originating from a leaky roof, water heater or even pipes between the walls. Mold can also grow in HVAC systems and be distributed throughout your home. The location of the moisture must be determined to effectively treat all areas.

Collateral Damage

Depending on the extent of the infestation, you might discover that you may have to remove wallboard, flooring and other building materials. A wide variety of areas in the home can become collateral damage in a mold infestation.

Prevention

There are multiple strategies you can employ to prevent an infestation. Keep gutters clean and have any damage to roofs promptly repaired. Regularly change the filters in HVAC units. It can also be beneficial to conduct a visual inspection for leaks in basements, under cabinets where water pipes are visible, around water heaters, and appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators and dishwashers.

How to Spot Mold in Your Home

There are approximately 12 types of molds that typically inhabit homes. Mold is a naturally occurring fungi in the outdoor environment that provides the valuable service of helping to break down plant and animal matter. It’s spread by spores through the air, water, on pets and on people and their clothing.

A mold infestation is fairly easy to identify once it’s located. The fungi can appear as an innocuous scuff mark on a wall or behind furniture. It may also look like a dirty area on any surface. Mold only needs moisture, warmth and relative darkness to grow and homes with a fungi infestation will acquire a musty smell.

If your home has experienced water damage from storms, roof damage or a water leak, there’s a good chance that there’s been mold growth. What you may not know is that mold can also grow in AC filters and ductwork that’s then blown about your home where it can start a new colony.

A DIY test can be done with a swab and a diluted bleach solution of 1 part bleach to 16 parts water. Dab a small area of the solution on the suspect area. If the area quickly lightens or continues to come back after it’s been cleaned, there’s a good chance it’s mold.

Mold can have a serious effect on health that’s often chalked up to allergies. Symptoms include coughing, sneezing, runny nose, and sinus headaches. People may also experience wheezing and difficult breathing, congestion, and a sore and itchy throat. If the symptoms get better when you leave the house, you should suspect mold. Some types of molds are highly toxic and have the potential to result in life-threatening illness.

The best recourse if you’ve detected mold in your home is to hire a professional remediation company. The professionals will contain the contaminant, have a sample analyzed by a lab, and treat the entire home if necessary to remove the affected area and restore air quality.

Mold and Moisture Testing

South Florida residents have a wealth of benefits conferred upon them by Mother Nature. However, those same advantages can also be the cause of excessive moisture and mold growth in homes and businesses. There are approximately a dozen ordinary types of fungi that can be found growing outdoors that are easily transferred into indoor environments.

Moisture

There are often a variety of signs that a problem exists, but they often occur so slowly and humidity levels fluctuate from day to day so the condition is easily overlooked. Excess moisture enters the air through cooking, washing dishes, drying clothes and bathing. Another way that excess moisture enters homes is through HVAC units that are old and inefficient. They don’t cool sufficiently, leading to elevated moisture levels.

In other instances, a leaky pipe or water heater may be the culprit. Even a small leak can result in structural damage to the home, but it also opens the door to accelerated mold growth. Special methodologies and technology must be used to eliminate the source of the leak and remediate the resulting mold growth.

Home humidity testers are available, but they can’t identify the source. The best solution is to contact a remediation company. The professionals will utilize an infrared meter that can identify the source of leaks even behind walls and under flooring.

Mold

A small amount of mold can blossom into an extreme growth in very little time when it has the dark and moist conditions it needs to replicate. Mold can be growing, even if it can’t be seen. There are at-home mold test kits, but every home has a small number of mold spores, and they can’t determine the exact type of mold. Even if the infestation isn’t extensive, it can affect the health of people and pets.

The professionals will take a sample of the mold and have it tested in a laboratory to ascertain exactly what variety of fungi is present. The area to be treated will be sealed to prevent contamination of other places in the home. The mold is removed and disposed of properly, and all infected areas are cleaned. When necessary, a surface is removed and replaced.

Mold Removal is not a DIY Project

The most important lesson everyone should learn about mold is that it’s not a DIY project and there’s a myriad of reasons why the professionals should always be called in. Mold occurs naturally in the environment, but it’s only when it grows in excess that it becomes a problem. There are over a dozen types of common molds that can affect homes and businesses.

Without knowing exactly what type of mold is present, individuals can inadvertently place themselves, their family or customers in danger. The first step in mold removal is to safely take samples of the mold and have it professionally identified to ascertain the correct remediation methods to use. A mold remediation company will perform that identification and locate the exact areas of infestation.

Mold growth will typically extend far beyond what’s readily visible. It can grow unseen behind walls, under floors and in attics for months before its detected. Mold also grows in places most people never even consider, such as ductwork for AC and heating units, in and near kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms, window sills, and even indoor plants.

DIY mold removal will only result in spreading the contamination and making a bad situation even worse. A professional remediation company will take appropriate measures to isolate and contain the infestation and remove it in such a way that spores won’t be spread to other areas of the structure. Professional mold remediation companies also know which biocides and fungicides with which to treat different types of mold.

Whenever mold is disturbed – even a little – it releases microscopic spores that are blown about by even the slightest air movement. Without the specialized protective equipment available to professionals, individuals are placing their health at significant risk by inhaling the spores. The potential for serious complications increases if an individual has allergies or a respiratory condition.

How Fast Can Mold Spores Spread?

Mold is a nasty little substance that is often found in damp, humid areas. But that doesn’t mean that it is not dangerous to inhale or even to touch. Many times the mold that is found in homes is not necessarily dangerous to everyone, but it sure is an issue for many people. It is important to understand how fast can mold spread in order to prevent spreading and the damage that can be caused by an infestation.

Spread

When looking into how fast can mold spread you need to realize that mold spores travel pretty quickly. In fact, the speed at which mold spores travel is more than a lot of people would have you believe. Spores can be spread in less than 24 hours. If you do not get rid of a mold outbreak quickly then you will find yourself often having to replace infected clothing or have to clean carpets and floors more often than you would like.

So if you are wondering how fast can mold spread in a day, the answer is not very quick. Mold will travel at the speed of about two to five feet per day.  The spread of mold is actually considered to be very dangerous because of the fact that it can create toxins that are harmful to anyone, and in many cases, it has been known to cause death.

Exposure

Being exposed to mold can be very scary. Once you have been exposed, it is important that you take quick action. Many times you can clean the mold off of yourself, but mold is often deep down in other areas, and getting out that way is very difficult. If you do not wash away the mold spores immediately, they will begin to spread and will cause a lot of problems for you, and for anyone else that comes into contact with you.

Toxins

Many people do not realize that the mold that causes diseases also contains toxins, and these toxins can be dangerous if they are inhaled. If you are concerned about your health and the health of others, then you need to know how fast can mold spread so you can act accordingly. Just as you would with any other problem, it is better to act quickly than to let things build up.
