How Fast Can Mold Spores Spread?

Mold is a nasty little substance that is often found in damp, humid areas. But that doesn’t mean that it is not dangerous to inhale or even to touch. Many times the mold that is found in homes is not necessarily dangerous to everyone, but it sure is an issue for many people. It is important to understand how fast can mold spread in order to prevent spreading and the damage that can be caused by an infestation.

Spread

When looking into how fast can mold spread you need to realize that mold spores travel pretty quickly. In fact, the speed at which mold spores travel is more than a lot of people would have you believe. Spores can be spread in less than 24 hours. If you do not get rid of a mold outbreak quickly then you will find yourself often having to replace infected clothing or have to clean carpets and floors more often than you would like.

So if you are wondering how fast can mold spread in a day, the answer is not very quick. Mold will travel at the speed of about two to five feet per day.  The spread of mold is actually considered to be very dangerous because of the fact that it can create toxins that are harmful to anyone, and in many cases, it has been known to cause death.

Exposure

Being exposed to mold can be very scary. Once you have been exposed, it is important that you take quick action. Many times you can clean the mold off of yourself, but mold is often deep down in other areas, and getting out that way is very difficult. If you do not wash away the mold spores immediately, they will begin to spread and will cause a lot of problems for you, and for anyone else that comes into contact with you.

Toxins

Many people do not realize that the mold that causes diseases also contains toxins, and these toxins can be dangerous if they are inhaled. If you are concerned about your health and the health of others, then you need to know how fast can mold spread so you can act accordingly. Just as you would with any other problem, it is better to act quickly than to let things build up.

Mold Removal to Protect your Family’s Health

There’s a myriad of symptoms associated with a mold infection in your home or workplace. Unfortunately, those early warning signs are often overlooked and attributed to things like seasonal allergies, asthma or even the flu. Mold spores exist naturally indoors and outside. An infestation is problematic due to health concerns and is exacerbated by enclosed spaces.

Mold is a fungus and there’s approximately a dozen types that are typically found in homes, though there are thousands that have the potential to be present. The fungi normally won’t affect you too much unless you have a compromised immune system, respiratory condition, or there’s a large infestation. Mold requires moisture to grow and thrives in temperatures between 70-90 degrees.

Symptoms can range from headaches; eyes that are red, watery or sensitive to light; sore throat; coughing; and wheezing. Everyone won’t experience all the symptoms, the same combination, or severity. It’s just one of the reasons that mold is difficult to detect. If you’re undergoing cancer treatments, have HIV, or are a transplant patient, you’re at greater risk of developing a fungal infection if mold is present.

The best solution if you suspect mold is to call in the professionals. Mold spores are easily disseminated and you don’t want it to spread. A mold remediation service will locate the source, take samples, and have them lab-verified to determine what type of mold is present to determine the best course for eradication.

The affected area will be contained and the mold safely removed utilizing anti-microbial agents and negative air machines to completely remove the mold menace. Preventative measures will be taken to ensure it’s not spread and to prevent contamination of other areas and surfaces.

Mold growth isn’t limited to damp basements. It can grow behind walls, within air conditioning systems and ductwork, and in the attic. A mold remediation service knows where to look for mold and the best treatment method of any type so you’re breathing fresh, clean air in your home again.

High-Risk Groups for Mold Exposure

Complications from mold exposure include nasal congestion, coughing, wheezing, skin and/or eye irritation, and upper respiratory infection. Really, anyone who comes into contact with mold can experience these symptoms. However, there are groups of people who are at higher risk of developing more serious complications from mold exposure.

High-Risk Groups

It is believed that there are three types of people who are far more susceptible to mold exposure than others. Here are these groups.

  1. People with respiratory problems like asthma, allergies, sinusitis, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This makes sense since mold causes breathing problems; those who already struggle to breathe are going to be more impacted by mold exposure.
  2.  People who have a compromised immune system. This includes those with cancer and HIV.
  3.  The very old or the very young, as well as pregnant woman, can be affected by exposure to mold spores. In young children their immune systems are still developing, so exposure to mold will have a greater impact on these immune systems. In older people their immune system is run down and likely already stressed by other things having to do with their age. This makes them much more susceptible to the symptoms that come with mold exposure.

These issues are not only limited to these groups of people, though. Anyone who comes into contact with mold can be harmfully affected.

If you are unsure if you are affected by allergies to mold, one sure-fire way is seeing if your symptoms subside when you leave the home or area where you experience these symptoms. It’s possible you could have an undetected mold problem that you’ll want to have addressed.

If you fall into any of the above risk groups and have been experiencing any symptoms of mold exposure, then contact your physician. It’s important to keep the areas that you are aware have mold clean and dry. Bathrooms and basements are often breeding grounds for mold, so make sure you address these areas of your home by creating better ventilation and removing the moisture from these areas. Clean and dust free are going to be your first steps in combating mold problems and the spores that might be negatively affecting you.

Those sensitive to the effects of mold should avoid things such as compost piles, cut grass, and wooded areas. Indoors controlling humidity in the home will help to keep the mold at bay. Removing the mold that you can see from hard surfaces can be done with soap and water or with bleach mixed with water. If you use bleach, be sure that you are in a well-ventilated area and never mix bleach and ammonia.

Being proactive with the exposure to mold is what’s going to be the best defense against any mold complications you experience. Knowing that you’ll have to be more diligent if you or someone you know falls into the above risk categories is going to go a long way to keeping everyone breathing normally and healthy. So do what you can to limit your exposure to mold, even if you are not a part of the high-risk group for mold exposure.
