Don’t Suffer with Poor Home Air Quality

The air quality of homes can be severely compromised and those living there are often unaware that anything is amiss. They may experience symptoms that are typically chalked up to allergies, asthma or sinus problems. Coughing, sneezing and shortness of breath are common. Symptoms may also include headaches and fatigue.

In the most severe instances, people may have irritation of the eyes, throat, nose and skin, along with dizziness and nausea. It’s particularly dangerous for individuals with respiratory conditions. People often notice that symptoms subside when they go outdoors or are away on vacation. Poor air quality can arise from a number of causes and it’s a serious health concern. Identifying the source and remediating it requires the services of a professional.

Mold is one of the most common causes of poor air quality. It occurs naturally indoors and outside, but it’s only when the fungus is present in elevated levels that it adversely affects air quality. There are approximately 12 types of mold that typically affect homes.

It grows in warm, damp conditions and can be found in air conditioning filters and ductwork where it gets blown about and disseminated throughout the home. It can also stem from leaks in pipes or roofs. Mold propagates itself via miniscule spores and can lodge behind walls, in ceilings and under floors.

There are also dozens of bacteria and viruses that infect homes. Many are beneficial and individuals may have developed a resistance to them. However, there are pathogens that can cause rashes and infections if they’re available in sufficient amounts, and most recently, COVID-19.

Poor air quality can be corrected with the services of a professional remediation and restoration company. The experts will take samples and have them verified in a laboratory to determine exactly what type of pathogen is present.

If mold is the problem, they’ll find the source and establish containment measures to prevent it from spreading. When bacteria or viruses are the source of the contamination, specialized sanitizers, disinfectants and other methods are available to return a home’s indoor environment to health.

Ways to Improve Air Quality in your Home

There are dozens of pollutants and contaminants in the environment that can affect your home. They’re brought in on shoes, clothing, and even your hair. Poor air circulation, elevated humidity levels, ventilation system problems, and even air temperature levels can contribute to poor air quality. Dust, mold, bacteria, chemicals, and insufficient outdoor air intake are also culprits.

Maintaining good air quality within your home isn’t as difficult as you might think. You can make your indoor environment an oasis of clean air that will also result in a more restful slumber at night. The following are some tips for accomplishing that goal.

Air Purifier

An air purifier filters the air in your home and can substantially improve air quality. The devices can’t remove every contaminant, but they will significantly reduce them.

Cleaning

Hard surface flooring is easier to clean than carpeting and doesn’t trap allergens like carpeting. If you have carpeting, vacuum at least once or twice each week, depending upon the amount of foot traffic, and make sure the vacuum uses a HEPA filter.

Clutter

A cluttered home traps and holds dust, pet hair, and other allergens. Consider placing keepsakes, photos, and souvenirs in glass cabinets for display. It will significantly reduce dust.

Cloth

Drapes, bedding, and cloth upholstery tend to attract allergens. Bedding should be washed once a week. Drapes that can be washed at home should be laundered once a month. Upholstery can be cleaned each week when you vacuum by using an attachment specifically designed for that purpose. You can also use hypoallergenic covers for pillows, mattresses, and box springs.

Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier can help keep humidity levels at an optimal 50 percent. They can be placed in homes and in basements to remove excess moisture that can lead to mold growth.

Filters and Ductwork

The filters in air conditioners trap allergens. They can be a source of mold and should be replaced regularly. Air ducts should be cleaned at least once a year. As your air conditioning works, it’s also circulating allergens through the ductwork and into all areas of your home.

Fresh Air

Open the windows and let fresh air in for a bit whenever possible. The exchange of air will aid in moving allergens out of the house. It’s especially important when people spend more time indoors.

Greenery

Plants are lovely additions to home décor, but they can also foster the growth of mold and trap contaminants and dust. Keep them outdoors.

Ways to Improve Air Quality in your Home

If you’re suffering from what you think is seasonal allergies – think again. The runny nose and itchy eyes could be the result of poor air quality in your home. The air in indoor environments can make you ill and those with respiratory ailments are especially susceptible to air contaminated by potential irritants encompassing pollen, pet hair, dust, and environmental pollutants.

The vast majority of people mistakenly believe that their home environments are cleaner than outdoors, but it can actually be worse and increasing with more people staying home due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Air conditioning and closed windows won’t prevent pollutants from entering.

Pollution from various avenues gains access through clothing that’s worn outside, mold and mildew in high humidity climates, and from naturally occurring sources such as radon, forest fires, and ground-level ozone. The following are easy ways to improve the air quality in your home.

Air Conditioning Filters

While an air conditioning unit provides a comfortable environment, the filter is also screening out a variety of pollutants. A dirty filter doesn’t remove pollutants effectively and actually makes your air conditioning work less efficiently, leading to reduced efficiency and higher cooling bills.

Air Ducts

Dust, pet hair, and mold can build up in air ducts and as air conditioner work, contaminants are spread from room to room. Your home can greatly benefit from annual ductwork cleaning by a professional.

Air Purifiers

A whole-house air purifying system, or smaller air purifier units throughout the home, can help significantly in reducing the number of pollutants within the home. Even a single purifier in the bedroom can contribute substantially to your health and more restful sleep.

Cleaning Carpets

Rugs and carpets attract pollutants and hold them within fibers. Regular cleaning is essential. You can clean them yourself with a home steam cleaner or have them done by a professional.

Exhaust Fans

You’d be surprised how many pollutants originate in your own kitchen. Gas and electric stoves emit carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide when you cook and bake. Exhaust fans are designed to remove odors and they’re effective for venting those chemicals.

Humidity Levels

Managing humidity levels is critical for controlling the growth of mold and mildew. A whole-house dehumidifier or several smaller units strategically placed throughout the home provides an excellent strategy for combating humidity.
