Mold Illness Symptoms

The First Sign of Mold can be Detected with Your Nose

People often live with a mold infestation for months or even years without even knowing about it, even though their nose is telling them its there. The first sign of an infestation by the fungi is a musty odor. Some also characterize it as a stale or earthy smell. No matter what you call it, the result is the same – mold growth.

The smell of mold has also been described by some as a damp, sour or rotting odor. There are approximately 12 types of naturally occurring fungi that may be found in homes. It lives outdoors and is brought into homes on hair, clothing, shoes and even pets.

Mold only needs moisture and warmth to begin multiplying. It sinks roots into any porous material, such as drywall, wood or fabric, and begins the process of expansion. Fungi releases what scientists call microbial volatile organic compounds (mVOCs), which are a type of gas, as they grow. It’s the mVOCs that are responsible for the odor.

Each type of fungi releases a slightly different smell, and identifying the source of mold can be difficult. If the infestation is expansive enough to cause odors, it’s typically large enough to see. Tracking it down can present problems due to where it’s located and the color often blends with its surroundings.

Once mold has become a problem your nose can detect, it’s well enough advanced to have an impact on your health. It can exacerbate allergies and respiratory conditions. You may experience a runny nose, sneezing and nasal congestion that improves when you leave the home.

Bleach and similar home remedies don’t work since they don’t penetrate down to kill mold at its roots. Call in professionals for a mold problem. They’ll use lab analysis to identify the type of mold, isolate the area to prevent it from spreading to other locations, and use appropriate methods to eradicate it.

How Fast Can Mold Spores Spread?

Mold is a nasty little substance that is often found in damp, humid areas. But that doesn’t mean that it is not dangerous to inhale or even to touch. Many times the mold that is found in homes is not necessarily dangerous to everyone, but it sure is an issue for many people. It is important to understand how fast can mold spread in order to prevent spreading and the damage that can be caused by an infestation.

Spread

When looking into how fast can mold spread you need to realize that mold spores travel pretty quickly. In fact, the speed at which mold spores travel is more than a lot of people would have you believe. Spores can be spread in less than 24 hours. If you do not get rid of a mold outbreak quickly then you will find yourself often having to replace infected clothing or have to clean carpets and floors more often than you would like.

So if you are wondering how fast can mold spread in a day, the answer is not very quick. Mold will travel at the speed of about two to five feet per day.  The spread of mold is actually considered to be very dangerous because of the fact that it can create toxins that are harmful to anyone, and in many cases, it has been known to cause death.

Exposure

Being exposed to mold can be very scary. Once you have been exposed, it is important that you take quick action. Many times you can clean the mold off of yourself, but mold is often deep down in other areas, and getting out that way is very difficult. If you do not wash away the mold spores immediately, they will begin to spread and will cause a lot of problems for you, and for anyone else that comes into contact with you.

Toxins

Many people do not realize that the mold that causes diseases also contains toxins, and these toxins can be dangerous if they are inhaled. If you are concerned about your health and the health of others, then you need to know how fast can mold spread so you can act accordingly. Just as you would with any other problem, it is better to act quickly than to let things build up.

Common Places You’ll Find Mold

Mold can be found anywhere. It will sometimes hide in the most unexpected places. Having said that, mold can only grow in areas where there’s moisture. Here is a list of places to look if you suspect that you may have mold in your home.

  1. Chimneys – The spaces between the bricks collect water and dirt. This makes it a great place for mold to hide out. To remove the mold, replace any rusted caps and call a chimney sweep. They will be able to get the mold out of the chimney and they’ll also get any dangerous creosote. This will help your chimney to work properly.
  2. Refrigerator Drip Pans – Underneath your fridge you’ll get a lot of moisture from spills and from condensation. This makes it a prime place for mold to collect and grow. To remove the mold, spray the pan with hydrogen peroxide. Then, wipe the pan clean with white vinegar. For best results, clean the floor underneath the refrigerator too.
  3. Front Loading Washing Machines – The door of a front loading washing machine will get wet when in use. When it’s not in use and the door is closed, mold can and will collect on the door. To remove the mold, wipe the door and gasket before closing. If you see mold collecting, run some warm water with chlorine bleach. The mixture should kill any mold that has collected.
  4. Window Seals – Condensation collects there and with the mixture of water and dirt, the windows are a great place for mold to multiply and grow. To remove, open the window after a heavy rain. Wipe the moisture from the windows. If the seals between the windows are failing, replace them. Cleaning your window on a regular basis will prevent the growth of mold.
  5. Dishes – When you stack dishes that are still wet, it provides the perfect environment for mold to grow. To remove the mold, place the dishes in a dishwasher. You will want to wipe the cabinets with some vinegar to kill any mold that may be collecting there too. When done washing the dishes, dry them completely before putting away.
  6. Air Conditioners – When running, these trap dirt and dust and then collect moisture from the air. This provides food and moisture for mold to grow. To remove the mold from your AC, remove the front plate and use a HEPA vacuum to get rid of the mold. Then, clean the drain pan with bleach and water.
  7. Bathroom Tub – After taking a shower or bath, moisture has collected on the sides of the tub. This makes it a perfect place for mold to collect and grow. To remove, mix bleach and water in a spray bottle and spray it onto the affected area. Wipe off after a couple minutes.

If you think you have smelled mold in your home or if you suspect it may be in your home, these are good places to look. Mold can hide anywhere, which makes it hard to find. But just remember that mold can only grow where there is moisture for it to grow. If mold is found, remove it as soon as possible.
