Why you Should Clean Furniture and Carpets

Carpeting and furnishings represent a considerable monetary investment, but you may not have thought beyond weekly vacuuming of the carpeting. There are numerous reasons why you should consider having your upholstered furniture and carpeting occasionally cleaned by professionals.

Health Concerns

There are any number of bacteria, mold, fungi and other contaminants that are unwittingly brought into homes and businesses on shoes, clothing and by pets. Contaminants that cling to cloth and fabric are difficult to remove without the advanced tools and techniques available to professionals. Ordinary cleaning will remove most of the dirt, grime and contaminants, but a professional provides a deeper level of clean.

Air Quality

Mold, mildew fungi, bacteria, odors, stains and a variety of allergens build up over time no matter how carefully you clean. It can seriously affect the air quality of any structure. It’s particularly problematic for those with respiratory conditions and allergies.

Odors

People and pets shed dead skin cells that attach themselves to the fibers of fabric. You may have changed a baby on the furniture or have a smoker in the house and spills aren’t limited to any age group. All of those instances result in odors. Cooking is one of the biggest sources of odors in carpeting and upholstery.

Money Savings

Periodic cleaning preserves carpeting and upholstery to keep colors vivid and textures fresh. It’s much more cost effective to hire a professional to clean rather than spend thousands in replacement costs.

Cleaning is Expected

All cloth and fabric furnishings and carpeting are sold with the expectation that you’ll perform regular cleanings as part of a maintenance regimen. Even if you quickly wipe up spills and the fabric is treated for stains, a certain amount of moisture will seep underneath the surface.

Smoke and Water

Any structure that’s experienced smoke or water damage should be treated professionally. It doesn’t matter whether it was a leak, a fire, or water from extinguishing a fire. The techniques available, especially to restoration services, will ensure that water is removed and the experts can treat and save a wide range of furnishings, even expensive electronics.

Check your Air Quality if you’re Consistently Feeling Ill

The air in your home or business can be making you sick and you’ll never even know it. The symptoms of poor air quality can occur at any time of the year, especially in South Florida, and they’re not limited to the traditional flu season. Air quality can be affected by a wide variety of factors.

One of the most important elements in indoor air quality is the ventilation and the availability of air exchange. Outdoor pollutants, air conditioning, and the behavior of occupants also play a significant role. Air purifiers can help, but they’re not a viable option should the air in your home be afflicted with mold, bacteria or a viral contaminate.

When individuals and pets go in or out of a building, they bring in contaminates on their clothing, shoes and even hair that will affect air quality. If biologicals such as bacteria, mold and viruses are present, families, pets, employees and customers can all be affected. Even the layout and design of a structure can contribute to poor air quality.

Symptoms ranging from coughing and sneezing, headaches, sore throat, wheezing, and eyes that are red, watery or sensitive to light may occur. The CDC indicates that dizziness and fatigue may be symptoms and can aggravate heart disease. Poor air quality is especially dangerous to those with respiratory conditions, that have HIV, or are a transplant patient. The potential for developing fungal or bacterial infections increases with poor air quality.

Radon is another contaminate that affects air quality. It’s an odorless, invisible radioactive gas that exists naturally in the soil. It can seep into structures and requires specialized testing to detect. Carbon monoxide is another invisible gas that can be drawn into homes from the soil and air and build up in your home or business without proper ventilation.

A restoration and recovery service has the ability to test air quality, identify through lab analysis the exact pollutants that are present, and employ effective treatments to eliminate them. Poor air quality occurs in a home or business through no fault of your own. Engaging the services of a professional remediation and recovery company ensures clean air and a healthy environment for your family, clients and employees.

Ways to Improve Air Quality in your Home

There are dozens of pollutants and contaminants in the environment that can affect your home. They’re brought in on shoes, clothing, and even your hair. Poor air circulation, elevated humidity levels, ventilation system problems, and even air temperature levels can contribute to poor air quality. Dust, mold, bacteria, chemicals, and insufficient outdoor air intake are also culprits.

Maintaining good air quality within your home isn’t as difficult as you might think. You can make your indoor environment an oasis of clean air that will also result in a more restful slumber at night. The following are some tips for accomplishing that goal.

Air Purifier

An air purifier filters the air in your home and can substantially improve air quality. The devices can’t remove every contaminant, but they will significantly reduce them.

Cleaning

Hard surface flooring is easier to clean than carpeting and doesn’t trap allergens like carpeting. If you have carpeting, vacuum at least once or twice each week, depending upon the amount of foot traffic, and make sure the vacuum uses a HEPA filter.

Clutter

A cluttered home traps and holds dust, pet hair, and other allergens. Consider placing keepsakes, photos, and souvenirs in glass cabinets for display. It will significantly reduce dust.

Cloth

Drapes, bedding, and cloth upholstery tend to attract allergens. Bedding should be washed once a week. Drapes that can be washed at home should be laundered once a month. Upholstery can be cleaned each week when you vacuum by using an attachment specifically designed for that purpose. You can also use hypoallergenic covers for pillows, mattresses, and box springs.

Dehumidifier

A dehumidifier can help keep humidity levels at an optimal 50 percent. They can be placed in homes and in basements to remove excess moisture that can lead to mold growth.

Filters and Ductwork

The filters in air conditioners trap allergens. They can be a source of mold and should be replaced regularly. Air ducts should be cleaned at least once a year. As your air conditioning works, it’s also circulating allergens through the ductwork and into all areas of your home.

Fresh Air

Open the windows and let fresh air in for a bit whenever possible. The exchange of air will aid in moving allergens out of the house. It’s especially important when people spend more time indoors.

Greenery

Plants are lovely additions to home décor, but they can also foster the growth of mold and trap contaminants and dust. Keep them outdoors.
