Protecting Artwork from Hurricane Damage

The announcement that a hurricane is bound for South Florida results in a flurry of activity. The actions most commonly taken are barricading windows with plywood and placing sandbags around foundations and basements. Those precautions will help, but there are other actions that should be taken.

Shutters

Artwork can suffer damage due to flood waters and flying debris. Permanently installed shutters are an easy way to protect homes from breaking glass and they don’t have to be up every time a hurricane comes through. For outdoor statuary, there are prefabricated, impact-resistant structures that can be erected over statues.

Shatter Proof Glass

Unlike ordinary window glass that will break, shatter-proof glass is manufactured in the same way as auto glass. It’s resistant to blowing debris and if an impact is hard enough to damage it, the glass spiders but won’t break, and holds its place in window frames.

Trim Trees

Flying debris is a major problem in hurricane force winds. Have trees inspected annually for dead branches and signs of disease. Plan for the removal of damaged or weak branches that can damage roofs. Trees that are precariously rooted should be removed to prevent them from falling on homes.

Move the Artwork

For those that have statues and paintings in their home, the best solution is to move them to a location that’s safe from flooding, but that’s not always possible due to the wide swath of destruction that a hurricane generates. Consider using an artwork warehouse to store any type of artwork in the event of a hurricane.

Insurance & Documentation

Keep photos and appraisals of all artwork in a safe place if the worst happens and an insurance claim must be filed. Have artwork re-appraised periodically as it goes up in value, make sure it’s ensured, and check the details of the insurance policy every year. Contact a professional restoration service if the worst happens.
