Preparing your Home to Minimize Storm Damage

Even a small storm can result in damage, but South Florida homes are subject to hurricanes that are much stronger and destructive. To minimize damage, it’s essential that you have a plan in place to prepare your home to minimize the damage, even if you don’t live on the leading front of a storm. Flooding and flying debris can affect homes farther inland and severe weather can spawn tornados.

Windows

Put up shutters if you have them or board up the windows with plywood. Don’t wait until the last minute, as plywood will be in short supply due to others boarding up their own windows. Another option is installing impact glass. It spiders and splinters like glass in windshields, but won’t break and fall from the frame.

Flooding

If there’s a danger of a storm surge, flooding, you live in a low area, or on an inland lake, sandbags placed around a home can aid in minimizing water entry. It’s also a good idea to check your roof for damaged tiles. Keep gutters cleaned to ensure that water flows freely and won’t back up under roof tiles.

Outdoor Items

Place patio furniture, children’s toys, trash cans and similar items in a garage or storage building to prevent them from blowing around and causing damage to other homes. Park vehicles in the garage and make sure outbuildings and garages are locked.

Yard Debris and Plantings

Have leaf piles cleared away that can block drains. Make sure you have any damaged tree branches or limbs trimmed to prevent them from becoming wind-blown projectiles. If you have coconut trees, make sure the fruits are removed. It’s a good idea to remove the produce from any type of fruiting tree.

Go Bag

You may be required to evacuate during a hurricane or shelter in a basement during a tornado. Keep a go bag ready for your family and any pets. The State of Florida and Red Cross websites provide a list of essential preparedness items and quantities to keep on hand.
