Ways to Improve the Air Quality in your Home

There’s a saying that “Your house is making you sick.” Even if you’re not coughing, sneezing or wheezing, the quality of air in many homes is less than optimal. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) pollutant concentrations are often 2-5 times higher than the levels found outdoors. That’s especially detrimental in hot, humid areas where people can spend up to 90 percent of their time indoors to escape the heat.

There are some very easy and inexpensive measures that individuals can take to significantly improve the air quality in their home. They’re particularly important in homes with children, the elderly, pets, and people with chronic health conditions.

Air Purifiers

Ionic purifiers are especially efficient at attracting and trapping small particles and preventing them from recirculating through the environment. They won’t eliminate every contaminant or pollutant in the air, but they can definitely help.

Cleaning

Even a clean home can attract and trap allergens. Carpets, drapes and bedding are the most common culprits. Carpeted areas and drapes should be cleaned twice a week with a vacuum that utilizes a HEPA filter and dust covers used on pillows. Cloth furniture should also be vacuumed.

Dehumidifiers

They help remove excess moisture that can lead to the growth of mold and mildew, especially in basements.

Filters

The filters in your heating and air conditioning can be a major source of allergen contamination. As the units work, they can be re-circulating allergens so change filters as often as necessary.

Flooring

It’s easier to keep allergens at bay with hardwood flooring, tile and linoleum as they don’t trap allergens like carpeting.

Plants

Plants attract dust and can foster the growth of mold. Even though they’re pretty, it’s best to keep them outside.

Reduce Clutter

Knick-knacks and keepsakes kept on shelves attract dust and allergens like a magnet. When you dust them, it simply spreads allergens around and can trigger a reaction. Over-furnishing homes also makes it more difficult to clean effectively.

Ventilation

Let in some fresh air whenever possible and use exhaust fans to remove cooking odors, fumes and contaminants. Fresh air helps dilute indoor pollutants from multiple sources.
