There are dozens of pollutants and contaminants in the environment that can affect your home. They’re brought in on shoes, clothing, and even your hair. Poor air circulation, elevated humidity levels, ventilation system problems, and even air temperature levels can contribute to poor air quality. Dust, mold, bacteria, chemicals, and insufficient outdoor air intake are also culprits.
Maintaining good air quality within your home isn’t as difficult as you might think. You can make your indoor environment an oasis of clean air that will also result in a more restful slumber at night. The following are some tips for accomplishing that goal.
Air Purifier
An air purifier filters the air in your home and can substantially improve air quality. The devices can’t remove every contaminant, but they will significantly reduce them.
Cleaning
Hard surface flooring is easier to clean than carpeting and doesn’t trap allergens like carpeting. If you have carpeting, vacuum at least once or twice each week, depending upon the amount of foot traffic, and make sure the vacuum uses a HEPA filter.
Clutter
A cluttered home traps and holds dust, pet hair, and other allergens. Consider placing keepsakes, photos, and souvenirs in glass cabinets for display. It will significantly reduce dust.
Cloth
Drapes, bedding, and cloth upholstery tend to attract allergens. Bedding should be washed once a week. Drapes that can be washed at home should be laundered once a month. Upholstery can be cleaned each week when you vacuum by using an attachment specifically designed for that purpose. You can also use hypoallergenic covers for pillows, mattresses, and box springs.
Dehumidifier
A dehumidifier can help keep humidity levels at an optimal 50 percent. They can be placed in homes and in basements to remove excess moisture that can lead to mold growth.
Filters and Ductwork
The filters in air conditioners trap allergens. They can be a source of mold and should be replaced regularly. Air ducts should be cleaned at least once a year. As your air conditioning works, it’s also circulating allergens through the ductwork and into all areas of your home.
Fresh Air
Open the windows and let fresh air in for a bit whenever possible. The exchange of air will aid in moving allergens out of the house. It’s especially important when people spend more time indoors.
Greenery
Plants are lovely additions to home décor, but they can also foster the growth of mold and trap contaminants and dust. Keep them outdoors.
