How to Test Air Quality in Your Home

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is essential for your health and overall wellbeing. Some of the first warning signs that you may have a problem include:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing and allergies
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dry skin and irritations
  • Inability to sleep
  • Dust buildup in vents and air filters
  • Unpleasant odors
  • Hot and cold spots

If you notice any of those symptoms and suspect your home is the victim of poor air quality, it’s easy to find out with an indoor air quality meter. There are a number of brands from which to choose. The amount of pollution will vary from home to home, even within the same community or neighborhood. An air purifier is a good option for any structure and ventilation is essential – just open a window.

IAQ Monitors

The devices continually monitor the air in your home. Depending on the model, it may measure levels of carbon dioxide, radon, and formaldehyde, along with multiple types of volatile organic compounds (VOC) encompassing those from cooking, burning wood and cosmetics to those emitted by upholstery, photocopiers, flooring, and building materials.

Mold

IAQ monitors typically don’t provide information on mold levels in your home. The general consensus among professionals is that they’re not that accurate. You should be aware that almost every home contains fungi to varying degrees. Mold is present in the natural environment and can enter your home on hair, clothing, shoes and pets. The fungi can even reside in HVAC units and circulate through your home. Dealing with an infestation of mold is a job for mold remediation specialists.

Radon Monitors

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms as a result of the breakdown and decay of uranium deposits in the soil. It’s odorless, colorless and a known carcinogen. It can enter your home through cracks in the foundation, areas around pipes, and flooring. It concentrates in the lower levels of homes. Radon detectors are a good investment in your health.

spraying mold

Why Spraying Mold is not the Answer

There are dozens of home remedies that people have used to kill mold in their house, only to discover it’s returned. The most popular home concoction consists of a bleach and water solution sprayed on the affected area. The facts are far different than reality – spraying bleach on mold is perhaps one of the worst things that individuals can do.

Bleach only kills some types of molds. It’s effective on most hard and non-porous surfaces, but it doesn’t work if there’s mold on surfaces such as hardwood flooring or drywall. When the fungi find a welcoming environment on a porous surface, it methodically begins to sink its roots deep into the surface. Simply spraying the surface doesn’t kill the roots so it regrows.

Moisture

Mold grows in warm, damp environments. Spraying bleach and water on mold does nothing but provide it with additional moisture to begin its life cycle again. The chlorine in beach quickly dries and dissipates, leaving the water to feed the fungi.

Color Loss

Mold will typically appear as a dirty spot. It’s often one of the first ways that individuals discover that they have a mold problem. Bleach leaches the color from mold and the surface may appear “clean,” but the fungi continue to grow.

Damage to Surfaces

Bleach has the potential to weaken the structural integrity of homes. When used on wood surfaces, bleach weakens and breaks down fibers. Bleach removes color from the items it touches. When applied to metal – particularly copper and stainless steel – it reacts with the metal and causes corrosion.

Lack of Sanitizing Power

When mixed with water, bleach quickly loses its strength. The odor of bleach may linger for a while, but it doesn’t provide any residual effects so mold and bacteria will quickly return. Light and heat also compromise the effectiveness of bleach solutions.

Safe Microbials

There are a number of microbial agents on the market – both chemical and those that are eco-friendly. Many are registered with the EPA as mold-specific. They have an immediate effect and actually work to prevent the fungi and mold from growing back.

What You Should do if You Find Mold in Your Home

Mold is present throughout the natural environment and it can easily find its way into your home. The spores are very tiny and can enter through HVAC systems, on clothing, hair, shoes and pets. It typically doesn’t cause too much of a problem unless it’s a large infestation, you happen to be allergic, or you have a weakened immune system.

Mold will typically make surfaces appear dirty and there may be a musty smell. According to the CDC, small infestations can be removed with home remedies that include a solution of bleach and water, followed by an antimicrobial spray when the bleach and water formula has dried. Special gear will be required. Here’s what to do if you find mold growing in your home.

Large Infestation

If the infestation is large, leave it alone. The best solution is to contact a professional mold remediation service. They’ll take samples and have them lab identified. The specialists will seal off affected areas to prevent it from spreading, treat the contaminated area, and dispose of any affected materials in an appropriate manner.

Follow the Moisture

Mold requires warm and damp conditions to grow. In many instances, a leak is responsible for the growth. Moisture may be originating from a leaky roof, water heater or even pipes between the walls. Mold can also grow in HVAC systems and be distributed throughout your home. The location of the moisture must be determined to effectively treat all areas.

Collateral Damage

Depending on the extent of the infestation, you might discover that you may have to remove wallboard, flooring and other building materials. A wide variety of areas in the home can become collateral damage in a mold infestation.

Prevention

There are multiple strategies you can employ to prevent an infestation. Keep gutters clean and have any damage to roofs promptly repaired. Regularly change the filters in HVAC units. It can also be beneficial to conduct a visual inspection for leaks in basements, under cabinets where water pipes are visible, around water heaters, and appliances such as washing machines, refrigerators and dishwashers.

Mold Illness Symptoms

Mold Illness Symptoms

There are approximately 12 common molds that typically inhabit homes and businesses. Mold occurs naturally in the environment and when there’s a significant indoor infestation, it can result in illness. Many of those symptoms are often attributed to other causes.

When exposed to mold, it triggers an immune system response that’s often attributed to asthma and other respiratory conditions. There are medications that can help with mold-induced symptoms, but the best way for people to deal with mold is to have it removed. That requires the experience and expertise of mold remediation specialists.

Mold allergy symptoms can vary widely among individuals and range from minor to severe. Much like ordinary allergies, they can occur all year, only during certain times of the year, or under environmental or weather conditions. Those with a mold allergy may experience:

  • Itchy eyes, throat and nose
  • Watery eyes
  • Headaches
  • Sneezing
  • Stuffy or runny nose
  • Cough and postnasal drip
  • Scaly or dry skin

For those that have other allergies or asthma, symptoms can include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath. Individuals may have an increased risk if there’s a family history of allergies. The same is true for people that work at jobs with a higher risk of exposure. Some of those include winemaking, baking and woodworking, along with farming, logging, and HVAC servicing. Structures exposed to moisture and with poor ventilation increase risk.

Most mold exposure produces mild symptoms, but it can also result in more serious conditions when mold enters the lungs or nasal cavities. Those can include asthma, fungal infections and inflammation, along with infections of the mucous membranes and skin. It can be especially dangerous for those with impaired immune systems.

Anyone that suspects a mold infestation can avail themselves of the services of a mold remediation service. They’ll isolate the source and take samples for precise laboratory identification. Mold remediation experts will then remove it without contaminating other locations.

Indoor Mold

How to Test For Indoor Mold Spores

If you think you may have mold growing in your home or business, it’s a good idea to have mold testing done. Mold can be a serious health risk to people and pets – even if it’s not showing up in the numbers, mold is still present. Indoor mold growth has been associated with serious respiratory problems including asthma. Even if the mold growth doesn’t cause symptoms, people who have a mold problem are at increased health risks for a variety of other reasons.

Mold Testing

Mold testing typically involves collecting a small number of black or dark spores from a contaminated air sample. Samples are then tested for common mycotoxins – which includes the deadly Stachybotrys chartarum and the toxic species Penicillium myristcae. Stachybotrys chartarum is known as the mycotoxin species because it produces mycotoxins when it grows. These mycotoxins can be dangerous in large amounts because they can irritate the membranes of the respiratory system. Inhaling large amounts of Stachybotrys mold can even cause toxic pulmonary asthmatic syndrome.

The second step in testing for mold is to test for spores of the species involved. There are numerous techniques for checking for these microscopic organisms. The most commonly used technique involves using an optical microscope to take a high magnification image of the sample through a water sample. If the spore appears, this implies that there is spore production in the sample and it may pose a health risk. High magnification images also help identify the species of mold involved – it’s a good idea to use various techniques to determine this so that you have a better chance of dealing with it successfully.

Airborne Samples

The third step in testing for indoor mold involves obtaining airborne samples. Samples of airborne mold spores can be obtained by using special masks designed to collect and contain the airborne spores. Mold spores will land on the mask and be inhaled, later entering the body. This is a common method of testing for indoor mold. If the spore is found in the mask, it suggests the presence of airborne mold spores.

Air sampling is not the only option that many people consider when testing for mold. A ventilation system for the home is another common option. With the right equipment and a ventilation system in place, many people believe that they can remove the mold if they simply open the windows and allow fresh air to enter the home. Unfortunately, if the ventilation system is not working properly, there could be many unseen molds growing in the home. It is very important to ensure that you are testing for mold both inside and out.

A Guide To Indoor Air Quility

Indoor air quality is directly dependent on the number of pollutants in your indoor air. The air that you breathe in every day contains thousands of contaminants. In addition, your indoor air may contain many toxins that have made it through your ventilation system and into your home. Unfortunately, not all contaminants can be seen or smelled. There is also the chance that some indoor air quality problems don’t appear to be visible or that you aren’t aware of. Either way, you can bet that some of the pollutants in your air are making you and your family ill.

A simple rule of thumb when it comes to Indoor air quality is this: if your ducts appear dirty, then they probably are. Regular duct cleaning services is a key cornerstone of improving indoor air quality throughout your home. In fact, the air ducts that transport air throughout your home carry many toxic and harmful elements such as radon gas, toxic mold, pollen, and dust. These gases and particles can build up over time and make their way into the air you breathe.

Contaminants

It’s difficult to imagine how much dirt and debris can accumulate in your ventilation system over the years. The majority of dirt and contamination comes from carpet fibers, dust mites, and mold spores. Over time, these tiny particles become larger and heavier, so they are more likely to be picked up by the air ductwork and cause contamination inside your home. Dirty air ducts are often the cause of many health problems for people living in unclean houses. Therefore, if you want to avoid these health problems, you should make sure the ductwork is regularly inspected.

Inspections

Although it is important to periodically inspect and clean your air ducts, you should also consider hiring a company that offers annual indoor air quality inspections. The reason why this is better than doing it yourself is that a professional service will have the appropriate equipment to be able to detect contaminants at an affordable price. Some companies also offer air duct cleaning services alongside their inspection services.

Now that you understand what causes indoor air pollution in your home, it is important that you take the steps you can to reduce or eliminate it. Indoor air quality has become more important than ever in recent years because of the number of pollutants indoors. Therefore, it is more important than ever to hire a reputable company to do a quality air duct cleaning. If you do that, you can breathe easier knowing that you and your family are breathing the best air possible.

Fire Restoration Services

The pain of reconstruction after a large, catastrophic fire isn’t easy; but, thankfully, fire damage restoration companies are prepared to help in the reconstruction process. With a trained, experienced team, much of what used to be lost can be brought back into life. When fire damage happens, it happens fast. It can spread in a variety of ways and create many different problems, from structural to aesthetic. In order to prevent future loss, and help return something to its original function and aesthetic appearance, the fire restoration process needs to be swift and thorough. That means getting all the right professionals on board.

Clean up

The first step to restoring any property damaged by fire is clean-up. Professional fire damage companies know how to properly remove the mess from your home. They will have special equipment to help get rid of black smoke and will have fire safety precautions in place to limit smoke damage to carpets, wood, or insulation. After the fire is over, they will need to evaluate the structural integrity of your building. In many cases, that means they will need to re-dry carpeting and remove mildew. Any insulation will have to be stripped down and inspected for damage.

Odor Removal

For smoke odor and black soot removal, fire restoration companies use special firefighting products to kill the bacteria and chemicals in smoke. This includes an extinguisher, which is either pumped in or placed inside the building. Deodorant is another important element for fire damage cleaning. Professional companies have powerful deodorizers with low concentrations of toxic chemicals that will neutralize odors. If you have smoke odor and black soot removal needs, contact a cleaning and restoration professional as soon as possible.

A final step in smoke restoration involves using warm water and mild soap or detergent to clean affected areas. This cleans the area and prevents dry heat and cracked paint from occurring after soot removal. Once the area is properly cleaned and dried, it is then treated with a fire retardant. This is to further prevent moisture from the surrounding air from reaching the affected areas and re-contaminating them. If you are unsure whether or not your home needs such treatment, consult your local fire department.

If smoke damage occurs in a home or other structure, contact a professional restoration service immediately for rapid and effective help. If smoke or soot damage is allowed to continue unchecked, it can cause serious structural problems that can ultimately lead to serious health problems, as well as premature death.

In-Home Leak Detection

Approximately 10 percent of all homes in the U.S. have a leak that goes undetected until major damage has occurred. Those small leaks account for nearly 90 gallons of wasted water per day, per household, and increased costs to consumers.

The good news is that there are a number of easy and inexpensive ways that individuals can test for leaks at home. Bear in mind that leaks may not be within the home. They may originate in underground lines and that requires professional services.

Increased Costs

One of the first signs of a leak that individuals notice is an increase in their water bill. When water costs consistently increase and there’s been no rate increase or changes in water habits, suspect a leak.

Water Meter

Shut off all the water in the home and make sure water-using appliances aren’t running. Watch the meter – if the dial continues to move, there’s a faster flowing leak. If the dial isn’t moving, keep the water off and check again in a couple of hours. If the dial has moved, there’s a slow leak.

Usage

Monitor water bills to detect changes in usage. When water usage habits don’t change within the home, but bills indicate increased usage, it’s a good indication that there’s a leak somewhere within the system.

Exterior Leaks

Outdoor faucets, hoses and irrigation systems are also sources of water leaks. If water seeps through connections on hose connections while the water is on, it can usually be fixed by installing a new rubber hose gasket. Call a professional for irrigation system leaks.

Food Coloring

Toilets are often an unknown source of leaks that can account for up to 30 percent of every day water usage. To detect a toilet leak, add a few drops of food coloring to the toilet tank. If the color appears in the toilet bowl after 10 minutes, there’s a leak that needs to be addressed.

Vigilance and Technology

Leaks can happen anytime and often go undetected for long periods before they’re found. Vigilance is required to monitor meters, water usage and changes in bills to identify leaks in their early stages. There are also water leak detectors that work wirelessly to constantly monitor water systems. If a leak is sensed, it immediately shuts off the water.

Individuals also need to be aware that the appearance of mold growth or a musty smell in the home can be an indication of a leak. It should be addressed promptly by professionals that specialize in mold remediation.

Restoration After a Flood

A flood is a highly traumatic event in a person’s life and recovering from it can seem like an overwhelming task. The restoration process can be considerably easier and far less stressful with the assistance of a professional restoration company. They’ll take care of all the details, will have an on-site claims expert, and works with an individual’s insurance company.

A restoration company can salvage a wide range of possessions and restore them to pre-flood condition for savings. It doesn’t matter whether it’s a small, localized flood contained to the home or the result of a force of nature such as a hurricane. Individuals don’t have to face the clean-up and restoration process alone.

There’s far more than just the water damage to consider. Mold can begin to grow in as little as 24 hours and the odor can be horrendous. Flooding from sewage lines or a hurricane are dangerous and highly toxic. Restoration specialists provide 24/7 emergency services and can respond within 30 minutes. The speed with which the restoration process begins is critical.

Restoration specialists have access to equipment, products, techniques and technology that aren’t available to the average individual. Thermal infrared imaging is utilized to identify where a leak originates so it can be stopped. Professional drying systems will be utilized to remove moisture from the premises.

In South Florida’s warm and humid climate, mold growth is a foregone conclusion. Restoration experts take samples and they’re analyzed in a lab to identify the exact type of mold that’s present to ascertain the best treatment option. Affected areas will be isolated to prevent the spread of mold spores and affected materials will be removed.

Complete structural cleaning will be conducted, the premises will be deodorized, and the restoration specialists oversee any rebuilding required. Salvageable possessions will be inventoried, packed up and transported to the company’s facility where they’ll be cleaned, deodorized, and treated to remove mold. Items will even be stored until they can be moved back into the home. The ability to salvage and restore affected possessions saves money on replacement costs.
