Are Duct and Vent Cleaning Necessary?

People generally don’t think about the ductwork in their homes or business. The systems convey air-conditioned air to keep people comfortable and provide a welcome respite from hot and humid air. However, there can be dangerous elements lurking in ductwork that can make people ill. There are a variety of reasons why ductwork should be cleaned, not least of which is better air quality.

Mold

Small amounts of moisture can collect over time in ductwork, providing an ideal environment for mold growth. All the fungi need to proliferate is a warm and damp environment. Mold that’s growing in ductwork is dispersed throughout a home or business every time the air conditioning operates. Periodic cleaning of vents and ductwork removes mold.

There are approximately 12 types of molds typically found in structures. Some are responsible for symptoms that are similar to allergies such as sneezing, coughing, runny nose, and watery eyes. Others can be far more dangerous, causing lung irritation, respiratory distress and even memory and cognitive problems.

Flooding

During a flooding event, water enters ductwork and it carries an extensive variety of contaminants. Floodwaters contain contaminants that include chemicals, human and animal waste, and medical and industrial waste. The water also carries bacteria, viruses and parasites. Cleaning ductwork after a flood removes those contaminants.

Fire

Not all burning materials in a fire are completely consumed. Microscopic particles called soot are released and they infiltrate even the smallest of cracks and crevices. Those particles are known carcinogens and they’re responsible for an odor of smoke that can linger for months. Removing them alleviates health concerns.

Dust and Debris

Dirt, dust and debris build up over time in ductwork that can attract insect pests and rodents. It can clump and block the flow of air, while distributing dust back into the air. Cleaning ductwork helps systems operate more efficiently, which saves money.

Can Floors Get Mold?

Mold growth is a common problem with South Florida heat and humidity. All mold needs to grow is warmth and moisture. The fungi sink its roots into organic, porous materials where it proliferates. Floors are vulnerable to mold growth, whether it’s hardwood or carpeting. It can be difficult for individuals to distinguish a moldy surface from one that’s dirty.

Floors can develop mold and depending on how long it’s been multiplying, it may have resulted in damage that can compromise the structural integrity of the building. Mold can appear under floorboards and carpeting. That’s where the services of a professional remediation company are invaluable.

It’s important to understand that home remedies are ineffective. They remove mold on surfaces, but they’re unable to reach the roots. The roots must be killed or the fungi will return. A professional remediation and restoration service will take a sample and have it analyzed in a laboratory to ascertain exactly what type of mold is present.

The experts will create a treatment plan and all affected areas will be isolated to prevent contaminated materials from infecting other locations. The company will treat and reclaim any affected materials whenever possible.

Carpeting will need to be removed, replaced, and the mold eliminated. When mold is present under floorboards, there may be no other option than to replace the flooring. If the mold has spread to underfloor supports, it can cause significant damage to the entire structure.

A restoration company works with professionals in other industries that can make needed repairs and they’ll oversee the entire project from start to finish. Mold can affect any structure. All the fungi require is moisture and warmth to begin the process and it can grow unnoticed for an extended amount of time. Anytime a musty smell is detected, it’s a signal that mold is present and a professional remediation company should be consulted.

Will Air Duct Cleaning Remove Smells?

Homes and businesses are subjected to an extensive variety of odors every day. They permeate every corner of a structure, originating from sources that includes pollution, cooking, trash, pets, mold, and smoke. Sewer odors are common from drains and decaying animals in ductwork can also occur. Some smells are simply annoying, while others can be dangerous.

Temporary Measures

To mitigate odors, many turn to burning scented candles, using an air purifier, or opening up windows. However, if the smell is coming from ductwork, all of those are only temporary measures and won’t get to the root of the problem. Only cleaning the ductwork will provide a long-term solution and is best performed by trained professionals.

Ductwork cleaning won’t eliminate an odor that doesn’t originate from the system, but there are many types of smells that can be traced back to ductwork. Regular cleaning and maintenance eliminate those concerns.

The Process

An air duct cleaning company will perform a video camera inspection of the ductwork to identify any specific problems that may exist. Samples will be taken and analyzed, a specific plan of treatment will be created, and all appropriate areas will be sealed off to prevent the spread of any contamination.

High-powered vacuums and other technology will be employed to clean and sanitize the ducts. Material from the ductwork is disposed of in an appropriate manner and clients receive a ductwork cleaning confirmation.

Cleaning of ductwork is essential after a fire or flooding event. Soot from a fire infiltrates every nook and cranny of a building. It’s a known carcinogen that can cause long-term health issues and the odor will last for months. Water that infiltrates ductwork during a flood is contaminated with everything from chemicals to human waste. Cleaning eliminates ductwork-related odors, reduces the potential for illnesses, and enables systems to operate more efficiently.

The Best Way to Diagnose Dampness

People have multiple ways of diagnosing dampness issues in homes and businesses. A simple sniff test can detect a musty smell that can indicate mold, but individuals don’t have to wait until their ceilings are sagging or the wallpaper is peeling. There are other ways to detect moisture and do it before the situation becomes dire. The best way of detecting dampness depends on if the individual is doing it or a professional.

Individuals don’t have to undergo flooding or have their premises saturated with water due to a fire to develop dampness. Excess moisture can manifest as liquid, humidity and vapor. Even with optimally performing air conditioning that extracts moisture from the air, dampness can occur from sources that includes drippy pipes, malfunctioning appliances, condensation, and roof leaks.

Temperature & Humidity Readings

Anyone can perform a dampness test at home with a humidity gauge and thermometer. It requires individuals to record the humidity and temperature in different rooms of the home or business, and outdoors, every half hour. Elevated levels inside the structure compared with the outdoor measurements provides insight into the potential for dampness.

Moisture Meter

Professionals use a moisture meter to take readings in different areas of a building. In the hands of a professional, an accurate assessment can be made. Professionals take into consideration multiple factors including the complexity of the structure, the construction materials, current condition and maintenance history, along with the meter readings. It’s not a good method for home or business owners, however, since recalibration of the meter is required.

Sight & Smell

Most people first detect a musty smell in a building. It comes from mold growth that accompanies dampness. They may also see evidence of mold growth on ceilings, walls, floors or near appliances. Water droplets on walls, dark or discolored areas, peeling wallpaper, excessive condensation and sagging may be evident.

Dampness in a building also contributes to a sensation of coldness. By the time the dampness has become obvious, it may have compromised the structural integrity of the building. It can also be affecting the health of everyone that enters.

Top 3 Restoration Services in South Florida

South Florida is subject to a combination of concerns with which residents have to contend on a regular basis. The climate makes the area vulnerable to the potential for tropical storms and hurricanes, wildfires and mold growth. The following are the top 3 most requested restoration services in South Florida.

Water Damage

From floods due to hurricanes or burst pipes, flooding of any kind requires prompt attention to prevent further damage. Water remediation services encompass removing the water, drying the premises, and rebuilding or restoring any affected areas. That can include removing flooring and wallboard, addressing any structural damage, remediating mold, and rebuilding and replacing damaged materials.

Fire and Smoke

When a fire occurs, a structure sustains damage from the fire, smoke, and water used to extinguish the blaze. Remediation services will remove the water, treat smoke damage, and repair destruction wrought by the fire. A remediation service also has technology that can salvage and clean many types of items that includes drapes, furnishings and electronics.

Home and business owners don’t have to experience a fire for their structures to sustain smoke damage. The smoke from wildfires will permeate buildings and severely compromise air quality. Smoke contains microscopic particles of unburned material, commonly known as soot. The particles penetrate even the smallest areas and have the power to cause allergy-like symptoms to serious health conditions.

Mold

All mold requires to flourish is a warm, damp environment. Mold is a naturally occurring fungi, but has the potential to infect homes at any time. The danger is higher after a fire or flood. Mold roots burrow into porous materials such as wallboard and simply addressing the surface infestation doesn’t kill the roots. Remediation services identify exactly what type of mold is present through laboratory analysis, puts measures in place to prevent it from spreading, removes affected materials safely, and can provide reconstruction services.

Can Smoke Odors be Removed from Furniture?

Few people know that odors from a fire can be safely eliminated from a variety of personal possessions ranging from drapes and area rugs to furniture, clothing and electronics. Yes, odors can be removed from furniture, but there are some limitations. Not every item can be salvaged.

A fire generates smoke that contains microscopic pieces of unburned material. Those particles, known as soot, are disseminated into the air during a fire and can be blown about by the lightest of breezes. The particles find their way into the smallest of cracks and crevices, including fabric and upholstered items. The soot is what causes the odor of smoke.

Restoration companies use an ozone treatment to remove soot, which eliminates the odor. During a treatment, a molecule is generated that reacts chemically with the molecules in soot and neutralizes them. An ozone treatment is cleaner than other types of methods and doesn’t leave residue or byproducts that have to be cleaned again afterward.

Ozone is a gas and can penetrate anywhere that air can flow. It’s the most effective way of ridding belongings and homes of smoke odors. It’s imperative that professionals perform the treatment. They have the training to precisely control the humidity, temperature and time of the treatment. Restoration experts know what materials can be treated. Leather, rubber, and some types of textiles and plastics don’t respond well when exposed to an ozone treatment.

Simply cleaning the wooden portions of furniture won’t eliminate the odor. The soot particles will still be embedded in the upholstery. An ozone treatment neutralizes the soot molecules. Items that have undergone an ozone treatment are clean, deodorized and safe to be reinstalled in the home.

Insurance companies like to work with restoration professionals. Every item that can be reclaimed is less money the insurer has to expend. It’s also beneficial for clients. It enables them to retain treasured pieces of furniture and antiques that might otherwise be lost forever.

Can Carpets be Restored After Smoke and Fire Damage?

Modern technologies enable a remediation company to salvage a great many items following a fire, but carpeting typically isn’t one of them. It’s not just a matter of removing the water. Carpets that have been exposed to fire are contaminated by smoke, soot, and mold is a very real concern.

Remediation companies can remove soot, water and mold, but the problem after a fire goes deeper. Water from extinguishing the fire will soak through the carpeting and into the flooring below, which necessitate removal of the carpeting, floor boards and affected wallboard.

The tiny particles of unburned materials in smoke, known as soot, permeate even the smallest of cracks and crevices and contaminate carpets. There’s a good chance that area rugs may be saved after a fire, but not carpeting.

The odor of smoke can remain in homes and carpets for months, even after multiple cleanings, unless it’s properly remediated. Soot is a dangerous carcinogen that can aggravate allergies, exacerbate lung conditions, and cause long-term illnesses.

Adding to the problem is the potential for mold growth. The fungi occur naturally in the environment and causes little problem unless it finds a foothold in a home. The conditions after a fire provide an ideal breeding ground for mold. The fungi can begin growing and multiplying in as little as 12 hours. It sinks roots into any porous surface, including wood, wallboard and fabrics.

While homeowners will need to write off their carpets as a total loss, the services of a remediation company aren’t limited to water extraction, smoke removal and mold elimination. Immediately after the fire, a restoration company will secure the site to prevent entry by intruders or looters.

The highly trained professionals have industrial level equipment and solutions for every phase of the cleanup process. The companies can also provide rebuilding services to restore the premises and works directly with a homeowner’s insurer.

Storm Damage Restoration

Minimize Storm Damage with These Home Improvements

It’s easier to limit the potential for damage to dwellings with some home improvements than to suffer the aftermath. Even seemingly minor tropical storms can wreak havoc on homes. The home improvements don’t have to be expensive, require a major overhaul of systems, or be expensive to be effective. It’s much better to be over-prepared than under-prepared.

Impact Glass

Installing impact glass windows and door glass helps protect homes from any type of blowing debris. The glass will splinter, but won’t shatter and break from an impact. It works in much the same way as auto glass. Because it doesn’t break, rain and debris won’t enter the home. The windows are advantageous whether used in conjunction with shutters or not.

Garage Concerns

A well-placed limb can shatter glass, damage garage doors, and provide an entry point for floodwaters and unwanted wildlife. Garage doors can be reinforced with bracing on the inside of the door. Braces can also be added to strengthen wheel tracks. Hire a professional to perform the tasks or consider the installation of a garage door designed to withstand high winds.

Basements and Foundations

Concrete is a porous material that allows water to enter. Sealants can be applied to concrete foundations that protect it against liquids. There are also methods that can be used to modify crawlspaces and basements that enables water to enter and exit instead of crashing against the home which can result in knocking the home off its foundation.

Backflow Valves

One of the most dangerous situations can occur due to sewer backflows. Consider having sewer backflow valves installed. They temporarily block drain pipes, thereby preventing backflows into the house.

Fortifications

Every home has weaknesses that can be exploited when storms manifest. Search out weaknesses in areas ranging from the roof and gutter systems to gables and siding. Have them appropriately fortified before a storm strikes.

mold in home

The Difference Between Mold and Mildew

It’s common for people to use the terms mold and mildew interchangeably. However, each has distinctive differences, even though they’re both types of fungi. Don’t attempt to address mildew without using gloves and protective goggles. Individuals shouldn’t try to remove mold on their own. It can be a serious health hazard and is easily spread to other areas.

Mold

To the eye, mold can appear fuzzy or slimy. It’s raised, not flat, and appears in colors of red, green, blue or black, depending on the type. Mold has a strong musty and pungent odor that’s very disagreeable. As mold proliferates, it produces microbial volatile organic compounds (MVOCs) responsible for the smell. It grows best at temperatures between 77 ad 86 degrees.

One of the most significant differences is that mold has roots that sink in and infiltrate porous materials such as wood, wallboard, leather and paper. Mold is insidious in its growth. It’s why home remedies such as bleach don’t work. Bleach kills surface mold, but doesn’t reach the fungi’s roots.

Mold generates symptoms in people ranging from runny nose, cough, sore throat and sneezing to respiratory distress, particularly in individuals with asthmas and COPD. It can also cause more serious consequences that affect the nervous system. Mold can cause memory loss, mood changes and depression.

Removing mold is complicated and requires the services of a professional remediation service. The experts have the tools, knowledge and expertise to kill mold at the root level. They can also remove infested materials and contain the infestation so it won’t spread throughout the entirety of a structure.

Mildew

In comparison, mildew is flat, typically appears white or gray in color, and is often powdery. Mildew has a distinctive smell similar to mold, but it’s much lighter in nature. People can experience headaches, sore throat and mild respiratory symptoms when mildew is present.

Humidity levels between 62 and 93 percent present an ideal environment for mildew growth. Temperature is equally important. Mildew produces best in temperatures of 77 to 88 degrees. Mildew grows on surfaces, but doesn’t sink roots into materials. However, there are some types of mildew that are quite resistant and the services of a remediation professional will be required.

humidity sensor

Types of Humidity Sensors

Humidity levels can be a problem in South Florida, leading to mold growth and uncomfortable conditions. At the same time, the amount of humidity in the air will have an effect on whether the air “feels” warm or cool. It’s a good idea to monitor humidity levels for the health of people, pets, and structures.

The proper name for humidity sensors is hygrometers and they work by detecting the moisture in the air. Knowing the humidity levels in homes and businesses enables people to control the environment by engaging air conditioning in the summer and a humidifier in the winter. The following are the three types of humidity sensors.

Capacitive

This sensor measures the relative humidity – the percentage of moisture in the air for the current temperature. They offer stable readings and can detect a wide range of humidity levels. There are tabletop models of varying sizes that can be set in any room of the house. Some operate with a battery, some don’t. There are also electronic models that operate via Wi-Fi.

Resistive

A resistive sensor also monitors relative humidity and is known as a hygristor. Like capacitive sensors, they’re an effective, yet low-cost option for measuring relative humidity. Resistive sensors are able to monitor from remote locations in which the sensor and the signaling circuit is larger.

Thermal

These measure the absolute humidity level – the level of humidity without factoring in the temperature. Thermal sensors are typically utilized in high-temperature environments or those that are corrosive in nature. They’re highly durable and are capable of providing higher levels of accuracy than other types.

Why It Matters

Relative humidity levels of 30 percent or less results in dry skin. It also affects the body’s mucous levels in the nose, throat and eyes, thereby increasing the risk of becoming ill. Low humidity can be detrimental to hair, leaving it with a flat appearance.

Low humidity increases the presence of static electricity that can give people and pets a shock, and damage electronics. Humidity levels that are too low warps furnishing and can even cause paint to crack on walls.
