How to Test Air Quality in Your Home

Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) is essential for your health and overall wellbeing. Some of the first warning signs that you may have a problem include:

  • Coughing
  • Sneezing and allergies
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
  • Dry skin and irritations
  • Inability to sleep
  • Dust buildup in vents and air filters
  • Unpleasant odors
  • Hot and cold spots

If you notice any of those symptoms and suspect your home is the victim of poor air quality, it’s easy to find out with an indoor air quality meter. There are a number of brands from which to choose. The amount of pollution will vary from home to home, even within the same community or neighborhood. An air purifier is a good option for any structure and ventilation is essential – just open a window.

IAQ Monitors

The devices continually monitor the air in your home. Depending on the model, it may measure levels of carbon dioxide, radon, and formaldehyde, along with multiple types of volatile organic compounds (VOC) encompassing those from cooking, burning wood and cosmetics to those emitted by upholstery, photocopiers, flooring, and building materials.

Mold

IAQ monitors typically don’t provide information on mold levels in your home. The general consensus among professionals is that they’re not that accurate. You should be aware that almost every home contains fungi to varying degrees. Mold is present in the natural environment and can enter your home on hair, clothing, shoes and pets. The fungi can even reside in HVAC units and circulate through your home. Dealing with an infestation of mold is a job for mold remediation specialists.

Radon Monitors

Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas that forms as a result of the breakdown and decay of uranium deposits in the soil. It’s odorless, colorless and a known carcinogen. It can enter your home through cracks in the foundation, areas around pipes, and flooring. It concentrates in the lower levels of homes. Radon detectors are a good investment in your health.
